Subject: Re: Marvel announces release dates for films thru 2019 Wed Oct 29, 2014 5:29 pm
I think it's ridiculous, especially since Marvel has 5 more superhero TV series coming out as well.
But at the moment Marvel can do no wrong, everyone was waiting to see how Guardians Of The Galaxy did, that was the big "risk". But once they knocked that one out of the park I don't think anyone would bet against Marvel Studios at this juncture. Considering that Disney owns them and they also own Star Wars and Pixar they pretty much control all of Hollywood at this point. At least the part of Hollywood that makes billions of dollars.
DC is in a much riskier place. They are nearly a decade behind Marvel in "universe building" and to catch up they are shoe-horning every character than can think of into Batman V. Superman. Whether it works or collapses under it's own weight remains to be seen. I think Snyder is a shit director and I thought Man Of Steel was utterly horrid, but enough people liked it to make it profitable, so we'll see.
Sony has reportedly been talking about trying to unload their rights to Spider-Man after the most recent film performed poorly. At this moment they only have Spider-Man and Venom to choose from, which seriously limits their superhero potential.
My personal prediction for the first big superhero flop is going to be the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot that 20th Century Fox is working on. The internet screamed bloody murder about the casting choices, so I predict lukewarm reception at best from the fanboys. Will have to wait until the first trailer comes out to see what kind of reaction it gets.

I'm with SD. Fantastic Four will most likely be the first to underwhelm. Marvel is probably hoping and praying it tanks as well. They've been trying to get the rights back to them for a while. Another box office belly-up and they may finally have their wish.
I'm looking forward to Deadpool, but I don't think it's going to make huge money. He's not a "family friendly" character, so there goes a chunk of folks that helped propel Guardians.

I'm no comic geek, but i see a fair share of films and i have an open mind, but, that said none of those movies seem/sound appealing in the least...

Gambit and Cyborg seem like long shots to me. Are they popular enough to carry a film? Dr. Strange kinda seems like a lost cause too, but I get the feeling they are gonna stray pretty far from the source material on that one.
Obviously the first thing to go is the stupid 70's costume and porn 'stash. After that, all you have left is a guy with magical powers. Lots of directions you can go that don't have to follow any strict comic story lines. He's pretty generic in that sense. I don't recall him having any major adversary that would draw in audiences either.
How may more times is Hugh Jackman signed on to strap on the old claws? I can see that franchise getting a reboot soon. He ain't getting any younger.
There's probably only a handful of films on that list that I'd probably see, so my opinion means diddly-squat anyway.

The re-casting of the older X-Men actors is already in progress, I think you'll probably see some new people playing familiar characters in the next movie.

...aka Shazam. Then I thought, "Oh wait, he's a girl now? And he's DC" I had to look it up.
Yeah, there's been around seventeen thousand "Captain Marvels" over the years.
The "Shazam" guy was the first, published by Fawcett Comics in the 40s. D.C. Comics (who were then known as National Periodical Publications) took Fawcett to court, saying he was just a copy of Superman. The court eventually found in DC's favor and they were awarded ownership of the Captain Marvel character, who they promptly buried in their vaults.
By the mid 1960s DC had apparently failed to maintain their copy right to the name "Captain Marvel" so it lapsed, which led to the robot "SPLIT!" guy from a rival publisher (who quickly went out of business).
Marvel Comics intro'd their own "Captain Marvel" a few years after that guy, but they made sure that they owned that name lock stock and barrel, forever and ever Amen, which is why the DC guy now has to go by "Shazam!"
He still goes by Captain Marvel, the name can't be used in any titles (hence The Power Of Shazam reboot series from a few years back). I always thought he was a goofy character, with all those junior members of the Marvel family, weird enemies, etc.

Dr. Strange kinda seems like a lost cause
There have been two previous attempts to bring Dr. Strange to the screen. First was a 1978 TV movie, which was intended as the pilot for a series ala the then-current "Hulk" and "Spider-Man" shows
...then in the early 90s Full Moon Pictures (home of Charles Band, the Puppet Master series, the Demonic Toys, etc.) wanted to do a Dr. Strange pic but they couldn't get it in gear before their rights to the character expired. ...So they tweaked the script a bit, changed some characters' names and presto, meet "Dr. Mordrid," starring Jeffrey ("Re-Animator") Combs as a very Strange-esque mystic.

Considering that Marvel Studios will have a bigger catering budget than both of those studios combined had to work with, I'd say they'll be ok.

I don't mind the idea of the odd super hero movie, but honestly I hope that a couple of these really, really bomb as it's just lazy lazy stuff from the studios (as ever)

Movie studios exist for one reason and one reason alone. PROFIT. Right now superhero movies are a safe bet, so that's where all the investment goes. Eventually they will peter out and some new fad will come along to replace them.

Not a rumor, he was introduced onstage at the big Marvel press conference on Tuesday.

As it stands right now, I'm most interested in the Black Panther movie. I always thought he was a really cool character.

That won't happen until 20th Century Fox sees whether the Fantastic Four reboot works or not.

This is some good news. I don't mind the X-Men movies being separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as they tend to operate in separate parts of the comic universe, but Spider-Man has been a member of the Avengers for quite some time now, so I wouldn't mind seeing him brought into the fold.
