Is there anyone here who likes synthwave music? It's a new form of electronic music that pays tribute to the retro sound that was very well known in the 80s.

I'm not sure that it's exactly the genre that you are talking about but my favorite band of this type are Nightsatan, there's a ton of great synth stuff from Finland, love it.

Pretty cool stuff. I have always been a fan of 80's stuff, metal and new wave. Mostly the "synth" stuff was along the lines of Devo for me. Also enjoy The Knack. Recently found their second album on vinyl and played it, its good stuff.

Arise dead thread!
Recently, I've been listening to a lot of Synthwave. Two things led me to explore this music: (1) Stormspell Records released a Sythwave EP by Wolf & Raven called Dream Hunters which I liked and (2) I watched Stranger Things and the soundtrack was great - particularly the main theme. I then started exploring the genre and I am liking a ton of what I hear.
Meteor in particular I like because they/he incorporates lots of guitars in his songs:
Wolf& Raven is also guitar heavy:
Timecop1983 has some smoother jams:
Here's the Stranger Things theme remixed and extended:
When I listen to this stuff I feel like: (1)I'm in a training montage before I fight Ivan Drago, (2) I am fighting ninjas, (3) I am exploring the off world colonies, (4) I am cruising in my Ferrari 308 at night under the neon lights, or (4) all of these things at once.
So it's a glorious collection of nostalgia for those that liked soundtracks by Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter.

^^I also recommend these and the Turbo Kid soundtrack (as well as the movie, an 80s homage as well). Also, John Carpenter has released a couple of recent albums. You could call him and Tangerine Dream the forefathers if Dark Synth.

I like most of the videos linked here. But I think you have to be in the right mood for it. Otherwise after awhile I start to lose focus.
But this is an interesting sub-style of electronic music. Thanks for the thread - I wouldn't have known it even existed without this!
Now I have to make a playlist for the next time I have a guys' evening playing retro video games.

Love this one, it sounds like a track from Escape From New York.
And I believe John is on tour playing his stuff

I've been enjoying listening to the group Cults for the last few months. They had two albums before they decided to call it quits. They're more synthpop with a sound vocally that hearkens back to the late 50's or early 60's. It's certainly not the dark brooding music that one would find from the likes of John Carpenter or that of "Stranger Things" (which was phenomenal). Anyways, here you go:

Yeah, it is one of the few show openers I don't FF through because it is a cool intro with cool music. Just finished up the series last night.

For some reason I keep returning to this song:
I think I prefer the more laid back and chill side of synthwave. Some of the faster stuff is cool but this track reminds me of 80s soundtrack music and that's the sweet spot for me.

Same here. Last night I threw a coat of tube overdrive on my guitar and wailed away to a bunch of it (think Vai's Love of God but synth heavy). The ambiance and textures in synthwave travel in such a massive spectrum that you can just get lost in it all. I'm gonna noodle around to this one tonight.

And a guy I work with saw him in Chicago a couple weeks ago. I thought he was kidding when he said he was driving 4+ hours to Chicago to see a John Carpenter CONCERT. The guy is a major sci-fi/horror movie geek so I would have expected him to make the trek if Carpenter was speaking about movies or something, but a concert? He said the show was great. And he got a sweet "The Thing" T-shirt featuring the husky in the opening scene.
