Everytime you illegally download music, God kills a kitten.

I wonder...do all the people who are so vocal about not downloading because it's illegal always drive the speed limit? Or do they always come to a complete stop at every stop sign? Because failing to do those things is no less illegal.

I go back to my original stance really. You either support the bands by buying the music/pledging/going to gigs etc... or you think that you should get everything for free, Spotify/YouTube/Illegal downloads. I'm not sure that I care about what else might go on, I think it's up to how you see it. It is illegal but it's hardly church burning.
If it doesn't fit with your morality, don't do it. If you do it, accept that you may be the one in a million that faces consequences for doing it.

In the 80's I taped off the radio every day. I have over a thousand tapes somewhere, probably in my dad's attic with stuff I taped off the radio. One station in Knoxville (called Rock 104 at the time) used to do the Labor Day 104 and would play the top 104 Rock songs of all time. I would buy enough cassettes to tape all 104 songs. I did it every year. I also recorded Rockline shows, concerts, etc. I just loved taping off the radio. Sometimes I would record "unscoped" (just putting a tape in and recording for 45 minutes straight commercials and all). Did I consider it stealing music? No, I was just a dumb 12 year old kid... I had most of the albums anyway on vinyl of the stuff I recorded off the radio... And I did not pay for most of those albums either, they were my brother's.... But now they are mine and all these years later I still didn't pay for them so did I steal those old Montrose albums after all??

Nope. I pick and choose the laws I want to follow as long as it's convenient for me.

wow putting a merit system on illegal activity
Speeding and rolling thru a stop sign are infractions. Illegal downloading is piracy and violates international and federal laws. So one isn't less legal than the other.
It comes down to one's perspective as to what is theirs, belongs to others, and what is fair game/open season.
I don't speed or California stop cause it can cost me tens of thousands of dollars due to me having a CDL and owning a trucking business. Not to mention, I can injure or kill somebody for being unsafe in an 80,000 pound vehicle,
So it seems you are cool with doing "minor" illegal activity as long as you don't get caught or you don't have an immediate/seen victim ? That is how I comprehend your speeding rolling thru a stop sign analogy.
There are people who choose to do the right thing even when nobody is looking and don't justify behavior due to convenience or on account of everybody else doing it as well. It just seems that we have a varied definition of what stealing is and what stealing isn't and perhaps even when stealing is okay ?
and after saying all that....why do you even ask the question when what others do is none of your business and not your problem ?

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I thought Shawn was just busting chops about folks general hypocrisy. Why are some laws followed but not others. I wasn't looking any deeper than that.
I posed the same general idea in that thread about not supporting certain artists. We're all ok with artists that abuse drugs and alcohol and bang groupies, but when they talk about politics or religion, we get our panties in a knot over it.
All seems pretty silly to me.

Perception is a funny thing isn't it.
Whatever Shawn's intent was or wasn't, I find it peculiar that he says we should mind our own business than inquires about what others do or don't do after the fact.
Next time I'll put my shovel away and not dig so deep.

I didn't "inquire" anything...I was wondering. Asking and wondering are two different thing. It was also sarcasm. Take a class.

One caveat here. Spotify is 100% legal, Youtube is a mix, some content is uploaded by the legal rights holders, some not.

Exactly, but I was making a distinction between personal morality and the law. I think that all of the legal and illegal music sources are okay, but if you really dig that music, then put your hand in your pocket.
Maybe the fact that I spent a decade taking highly illegal drugs every day has skewed my perception of the importance of laws that I don't want to follow

"inquire" is a synonym for "wondering". I did take that class. BTW, "sarcasm" is anger's ugly cousin or aka as a cowards way to show anger. I took another class too.
