| Of all the things I miss about the old Hollywood, I'm most fond of the poster art. Today's art lacks imagination (someone please explain why almost every drama has to have the cast's faces lined up smiling in front of some natural scenery??) and very little of it is hand drawn anymore. Here's a place to put those old, towering, incendiary, you get it epic images up. Of course we have the Star Wars and Star Trek posters, which I may post later for the hell of it, but I'll start with something a bit different. My favorite poster art of all time: The movie is almost great for a casual fan of the books since it's, for the most part, faithful, but not an ideal 2.5 hours for those not familiar with Herbert's book(s). David Lynch added in some pure shit that had no connection with the book or its themes and set a lot of fanboys off (I'm more forgiving). Bombed pretty bad at the BO. Anyway, I'd rather not review the movie itself, but point out the grandeur in the above image. It's pretty striking how we not only get the protagonist and love interest on taking heroic poses on the planet Arrakis, but also the hundreds of Fremen lined up behind them beneath a neon sky lined with frigates and hoisting a glowing Arvon moon on the horizon (could be Krelln; wishing the artist would have provided more detail to be sure.). The shadowing, detail, and composition is actually more awe-inspiring than anything in the movie (although it tries, it does). Wanting to get a full-size framed in glass someday. EDIT: Okay. Now that I look at it more closely I see I never noticed some minute scarring on the surface of the horizon moon. Possible it's Maud'Dib, that would make it Arvon. Upper corner moon, as cool as it is, is featureless so that doesn't help. Analyzing this further, why is the Arvon moon drawn behind Chani? There is the Water of Life side effect of Paul's conscious inhabiting Chani during sietch tau, so maybe we're seeing a metaphor as foreshadowing. Somebody help me out?

| All good stuff so far; I've always loved the Bond work. So much, in fact, that I refuse to give up my Diamonds Are Forever VHS because it has that poster art on the front. Mesmerizing. | |

Not all newer posters are lacking imagination - some poster are very cool and work well. The good older ones have just stood the test of time. There are also TONS of older ones that have aged badly. And of the ones that are new now, some will stand the test of time and other will not. | |
