Yeah, that first Sugar Ray album was a really good hard rock record.

The first Sugar Ray album, Lemonade and Brownies, is brilliant! Such a fantastic album. Floored is pretty good, but not on the same level. Sadly, that album produced "Fly," which of course taught the band how to became super-successful in the mainstream, and they rode that wave to the bank.
Never again did they come even close to the heavy stuff. They sold out and have written nothing but light, acoustic-based pop songs since. Such a shame.
That sir they did.. Crazy bcuz you could tell they loved to rock but then the MONEy started hitting them and Im sure their heads exploded.

This has me curious because all I've heard is Fly and another single, forgot the name, and I hate both of them. I'll have to take a listen to Lemonade and Brownies. On a side note, that sounds delicious right about now.

I wouldn't say surprised, more like shocked to the core with this one!!
I loved Walls of Jericho and my first reaction to hearing this was
It took me a good ten years to get over the shock and realise that it's a decent song.

I remember when rock acts where changing their sound up in the 90's and the radio would announce that they'd sold out to grunge, so I didn't expect much from the following but was pleasantly surprised when I heard the actual albums:
Corabi's Motley Crue Warrant - Ultraphobic Skid Row - Subhuman Race Black Crowes - Amorica (wasn't even close to a grungy vibe)
Winger's Pull surprised me in a bad way, though.

That was just them progressing along with some Latin(High Head Blues) and Country(Wiser Time) sounds added in...... and Grateful Dead-ish type jams live. That album kicks so much a**!!!
Yeah, no grunge on that album.

Just thought of Kiss' Revenge. Everyone I knew that liked Kiss hated that album, local radio tore it to pieces, newspaper critics gave it a thumbs down...I bought the cassette and it didn't come out of my Walkman for a month. I still love it. It was well-crafted heavy rock...which is what Kiss was.
More on Corabi's Crue...I think that really is the most underrated metal albums out there. I read so much hate on the internet about it, and I don't know why. It's the best thing Crue ever did. Heavy as hell and a total riff-fest. Corabi's vocals were insane. I think they should have released it under a different name. On of my top 50 for sure.

A recent discovery for me is REO Speedwagon's 70's albums. Previous to this board actually, I had completely written them off as a waste of time based on their big hits. I checked into the back catalog before they got huge and WOW! They can rock!! They absolutely nailed down the 70's hard rock sound.

Now I'm curious. I had the album with Working for the Weekend on vinyl and I kinda dug the ballads and really hated the upbeat stuff.

I agree. I listened to this a few days ago. It had been awhile but this album smokes. Tommy Lee pounded the hell out of the drums...some of his best work. The song writing was very heavy. This is by no means a glam/sleaze album but a heavy metal album.

Yeah, same with my friends. Many of them had given up on Kiss around the Animalize era but were blown away when Revenge came out.

Motley Crab is my fave Crue album and one of three that I listen to nowadays.
'70s REO is also some good stuff with the album REO being my fave.

Of the ones that I own, I think that Nine Lives is the best one by quite a bit.

It was most likely a local thing. Our local paper gave it an F, and Rolling Stone is a big seller around, and they of course gave it negative marks. People I knew were selling their copies like mad, and the local Warehouse was overstocked. Even our local rock station refused to play any singles except for Domino late night. I agree though; best album since Creatures, and didn't it do significantly well on the charts?

Train is another one for me that did nothing with Drops of Jupiter when it first came out and then i heard the rest of the album. they are not a one-hit-wonder chick rock band at all but have some genuine talent and can write great songs, albeit a little sappy.
The thing that frustrates me about Train is that the are able to rock, they just don't do it too often.
I remember seeing them on an episode of VH1 Storytellers together with Fuel, and at the end both bands did a really good version of Led Zeppelin's Ramble On.
So maybe they're a band that would come across better to the likes of us in a live setting than they do on their albums.

Fuel is actually a talented band but they tend to write by the numbers without anything standing out. I've heard so many good things about their live shows.

Same with me (except 1 review I read stated simply "the only Revenge KISS is getting is on it's fans" and that was it) . It's in my top 3 KISS albums for sure.
