I have come across so many songs these days from bands I really don't know much about and some of them blow me away. Then I go look at some of their other songs and they sound nothing like what I just heard.
Here is a prime example.. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. A Christian Rock** band that IMO falls in with bands like The Used, Silverstein, and Story of the Year.. Nothing heavy..
Nothing remarkable about the song but it's def kick ass IMO and has a killer riff hidden in there and a great guitar solo.....
That being said, what are some songs by bands you may not like that you have found pretty killer..

Lostprophets and story of the year had some sweet riffing that I didn't expect amidst a sea of garbage.

You can't listen to Tatesryhce because of how much of a douche GT is, but you can listen to Lostprophets?!!!
Man you must be seriously unaware of what is happening in that band!

I thought the song Last Train Home was killer but with the whole sex offenses against minors thing that ends that.
I tend to prefer my country in the very old school fashion but for some reason I always dug this tune. Could've used a much longer solo but what can you do.
Then there's this...

Oh nononononono I don't actively listen to them. I had heard the album with Last Train and was like "wow that's a tight riff" here and there. Yeah I heard about the sex scandal and wtf'd. Never been a fan though.

Lostprophets debut was pretty intense compared to what they have been putting out nowadays.. Story of the Year def have some killer riffs especially the song "Is this my fate," He asked them!
Here are a few more I rly dig and Im not a big fan of the bands...
Im actually a fan of these guys but this song just blows me away on another level...

I don't like anything this band has done outside of this song, which I think rules.
If you're not manly enough to enjoy that one, check out this version, which is just as cool:

This song convinced me to take another look at this band beyond the radio hits (even tho this is a bonafide radio hit). The solo and dynamics are so very well written and the way that they play gives me chills.

Train is a band that went the other way around for me. I heard Drops of Jupiter when it came out, loved it, and bought the album. I was pretty disappointed to say the least.

I forgot about PoM. Their covers album, surprisingly, is actually really good.

Train is another one for me that did nothing with Drops of Jupiter when it first came out and then i heard the rest of the album. they are not a one-hit-wonder chick rock band at all but have some genuine talent and can write great songs, albeit a little sappy. I have to be in the right mood to listen to them.

the Georgia Satellites are a band that I thought would suck after the obligatory radio hit, turns out that they freakin ROCK!. A great band that got screwed by radio overplay.

I know a good one: Blues Traveler. I hated hated hated Runaround when it came out, all cute with the fancy/showy harmonica solo. I kept thinking, "this song has nothing to do with their name." When I heard the album, I was mesmerized. It's like Runaround didn't even belong on there.

Definitely! A misstep that paid off! Runaround is not good but the rest of the stuff is great.

The Georgia Satellites are great. And they should've had more hits. Overplay and the fact that song was basically treated like a novelty/joke really hurt them in the end.
I saw Blues Traveler back in 1991 at a college gym. Their first album had come out and "But Anyway" was sorta a college radio hit at the time. So basically that was all the fifty people there wanted to hear. The rest of the show was pretty great even if the "crowd" wasn't. The lead guy played a almost half hour harmonica jam. I was impressed by that and thought it was great. I was clearly the only one in the audience to feel that way. I'm still a fan of that first album but nothing ever has compelled me to get any others.
And speaking of that show there was an awesome southern rock band with two brothers who opened. 20 years plus I've yet to figure out who they were.

i have heard most of Sugar Ray's stuff, as my brother is a huge fan but I just can't get in to them. Another one that I just can't do from that era is Smash Mouth. What were those guys smoking when the started recording?!?! they are terrible.

Not the Black Crowes?
Yeah, American musical radio strikes again. Yeah, American musical radio strikes again. I wonder how many good bands/artists had their career killed by singles and overplay on the radio? The Black Crowes are a fantastic band but all most people know is Hard to Handle

Ditto Smash Mouth. My wife loves that band, but I was so happy when the CD turned up missing. Again, it's all very cute, almost like kid's music, even with all the swearing.
Goo Goo Dolls SHOCKED me. I mean, I loved the title track; it's the whole reason I bought the CD. But hearing that album blew me away. It was so much more punk than I thought it was going to be.
By the way, Rob:

The first Sugar Ray album, Lemonade and Brownies, is brilliant! Such a fantastic album. Floored is pretty good, but not on the same level. Sadly, that album produced "Fly," which of course taught the band how to became super-successful in the mainstream, and they rode that wave to the bank.
Never again did they come even close to the heavy stuff. They sold out and have written nothing but light, acoustic-based pop songs since. Such a shame.
