I'm sure most people my age remember seeing the ads on TV for numerous K-Tel collections, back in the pre-internet days these were good low-budget ways to check out songs by bands you weren't familiar with.
Here is one I bought in the summer of 1980, at first glance it kind of seems like an odd duck collection of songs, but this record perfectly captures what it was like listening to FM radio in the late 70s.
Side One: Don't Bring Me Down - ELO Dirty White Boy - Foreigner Two Tickets To Paradise - Eddie Money Too Rolling Stoned - Robin Trower (Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult Dream Police - Cheap Trick Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) - Robert Palmer
Side Two: Renegade - Styx More Than A Feeling - Boston Something's On The Move - Jethro Tull Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' - Journey Isn't It Time - The Babys Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas Hold The Line - Toto
I literally played this record until it was worn out.
Think I'm going to make a Spotify playlist to relive this one, it was an important record in my musical development.
That's funny............ I just saw that at a Goodwill today and almost picked it up!

Did any of these K-Tel comps have exclusive or different tracks (live, edits, remixes, etc.) on them? Just curious.
Also, it's funny how we collectively have fond memories of some of these comps, yet would vomit out our eyeballs at the mere mention of "Now That's What I Call Music" collections. Nostalgia or elitest d-bags? You decide

Well, in all fairness those "Now that's what I call music" comps suck and full of crappy songs.... at least K-Tel released different albums for different genres.

Are you really going to argue the validity of a Gino Vannelli song? And those "Now..." comps feature different genres too, if I'm not mistaken.
Alls I'm saying is that someday in the far off distance, someone just may very well wax nostalgic for a "Now That's What I Call _____" cd that they listened to as a kid and will want to plug into the data port in the back of their neck and import a playlist with Sisqo's 'Thong Song' or do the macarena with 'Los del Rio'
They aren't any different that what K-Tel did 30 years ago. But ,yea, we had better music back then.

Do they have different genres? I didn't know that...... K-Tel put out some crap too.... and you are correct, we did have better music back then..... even the crap pop music was better than what is passed off as "pop music" today!

K-Tel was a local company. Even had the industrial Blvd that they were located on named after them [K-Tel Drive]! Sadly, they got bought up by Navarre or Roller Blades or some other company. Still have tons of K-Tel comps in my store for cheap though!

The "Hooked On Classics/Swing" series was part of my parents collection for sure. There was another one I had as a kid that had a bunch of silly songs on it. I gotta find that one.
We had that one back in the day and I thought it was great.
