August Is Going To Suck!

Starting this comming Monday, at work we will be working 10 hour days M-F and we'll be working every Saturday in August (hopefully not for 10 hours but that remains to be seen). Our station already works 10 hours a day (and occasionally 11-13 hour days) so that won't be much of a difference but I at least have the whole weekend (sometimes Saturday is voluntary but I don't like giving up my Saturdays). This time Saturday is mandatory.

We work in an non-air contitioned warehouse and all I have are some fans blowing recurcuated air (that I had to purchase myself). At our station we usually stay in one position so I have all my fans at my position but we have a new crew lead who may start rotating us which means, in order for me to cool off, I'll have to buy more fans (I've already spent over $60 in fans) because it would take too much time to move them everytime I move. I've tried to get my co-workers to pitch in but they won't (either because they can't spare the money or don't believe they will be at our station much longer). I have a hard time with the heat so I really have no choice if I want to survive a 50-60 hour weeks. To make matters worse, I will have to work on my birthday.

On weekends, I still have to do house and yard work. I would nomally be able to do all that on one day and rest the other. Now I have to do all my work at home on the only day I have to relax. I know I don't participate much in life, but I do like to watch it pass me by.

The only good thing is that my paychecks will be quite large due to overtime (I estimate getting $533-595/week vs. $442-493/week). I guess whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger but why does the stuff that gets you stonger have to kill you?

It wouldn't be so bad if they installed the AC like they said they were working on to be ready at the end of July. However, nobody has seen hide nor hair of any AC unit. Judging by the amount of time they spent remodeling the bathrooms and installing a wall, if they do start working on it soon, it won't be ready til the summer's over. At least I have a very attractive Mexican girl working next to me as a nice distraction .

Water and lots of it! Also, if you can, try to wear some microfiber shirts as they will wick away the sweat much better than cotton.

I say work OT while you're still young enough to, these days I work 8 hours and not a minute more or I'll die.

Yeah, I'm kind of shooting myself in the foot with that but I can't bring myself to cut it off. I do have it undercut so when it's in a tail, it's much cooler than if I had regular long hair.

August is normally the hottest month of the year here in CT we have no AC in our living room so its been hot already hoping August flies.

But August 1st I got a interview for a job at a college help desk and STP is going to be in my area in August too but its the same day as my girlfriend's Sister's wedding so Im missing out on STP

August is the hottest one here too (and the most humid). As for water and gatoraid, I drink that stuff constantly. I wouldn't have made it this far without lots of hydration and my fans. It could help if we were allowed sleeveless shirts and shorter shorts, but all shirts must have sleeves and shorts must be at mid-calf.

Remember when you are working 60 hours a week, sweating your balls off, frustrated at the workload, and generally worn out that you could always be at home w/ no job at all.

Man, i've been there and to top it off I was working nights. Do what you have to do to keep cool, if the hair has to go then do it. You'll make it and you'll be rewarded with some new cd's with that cash.

Believe me, I know how fortunate I am. I'm also lucky they have overtime. When I worked retail most jobs considered 5 minutes of OT excessive (particularly Wal-Mart). I may not have much of a base pay, but time and a half makes up for that. I'm also going to be permanent (up til this point it's been temp work) very soon as I've already taken the drug test/physical and have gone through the background check. I'll get a $1/hour raise and health benefits (not to mention vacation time after a year). I also have the added benefit that I'm good at what I do (in such a short period of time), get along with my co-workers, and I'm one of the few willing to stay late if I'm needed (had a 13 hour day Friday and the last 2-3 hours it was only me and one other guy at our cell (work station).

Oh, I think I've ordered way too many shirts as of late. Unless they're part of a packaged deal with CDs, I must supress the shirt collector in me. I'll be driving a pick-up truck soon and will be spending more on gas (not to mention some new speakers and a new radio-the cheapest money can buy of course) and I need to start padding my savings.

What kind of warehouse job is it? Glad it's working out for you.

I assemble light fixtures for wholesale commercial use (we're an assembly plant and warehouse combined). My position is assembling the frames though we may be rotating which means I will also be wiring, testing, and boxing for shippment (something I've been hoping doesn't happen). I prefer the frames as I've become very fast and very good at it.

I work in a warehouse only part time, I imagine 10 hour days have got to be brutal! Hope you pull through, the money has got to make it feel worth it!

Not as light as you might think. We have to keep the assymbly line moving at a constant pace. Many times I have two people wiring which requires me to move at a constant fast pace just to keep up (causing me to get frustrated at not being able to keep up resulting in mistakes that slow me down). The plus side is that time goes by fast as long as there's enough parts and we don't run out of building material. It's not icredilby heavy work but it's not as light as it sounds (a fact I found out after the first week). The worst part is that if we finish more in an hour that is required, they just keep increasing the amount that needs to be done in an hour. Not much in the way of heavy lifting, just the repetitive motion and increasing expectations that takes it's toll as the day goes by.

Hey Bro I feel for you! I work in a 120 degree shop 10 hours a day! Us southern boys know how to handle the heat!!

I work on a highway pavng crew out in the mddle of nowheres (The Dakota's, Wyoming, and Montana) 12 to 14 hour days, 5 to 6 days a week, and HOT asphalt. (quit whinning son) Good to see your gainfully employed DB. Stick with it
