I have some questions for the vinyl lovers of the HOTM and was hoping to take a little "survey" of your thoughts.

1. What turntable(s) do you use?
2. Do you rip vinyl to a digital format? If so, what program do you use and how do you like it?
3. How do you store your LPs? - shelves? crates? something else?
4. How do you clean your LPs? - both new and used.
5. Have you ever cleaned an LP using wood glue? If so, did it work?

I have not really heard anything on vinyl although I do own a few, but, I have heard that vinyl actually has a better sonic range and sound than CD's and if this is the case then I need to get in to collecting some. Any truth to this?

My local record shop has quite a few vinyls but they are like $20 and up for new. This seems like a ridiculous price when they can be produced for a whole ;lot cheaper than CD's (or so I have been told). Whats up with this?

No, just what the albums came with

Just Iron Maiden and the sound on picture discs sucks, it's awful. They are for collecting, not playing

9. Do you buy vinyl of new albums? If so, how do you find the sound?
Yes, Iron Maiden picture discs (sound quality sucks). I do have a couple other 180 gram vinyls of newer stuff - Dream Theater's latest sounds good. I have a couple Trans-Siberian Orchestra and they sound good too (180 gram vinyl). Metallica - Death Magnetic on regular vinyl sounds awesome


10. Do you think vinyl sounds "better" than digital? If so, what do you mean by that?
No - I think CD's sound better for the most part, the exception being Death Magnetic (it's not as compressed). For the most part, I think CD's sound clearer - Vinyl will always have that background noise made from two things touching.

That's my opinion - I had my brother, his wife and a friend over recently and played Piece Of Mind. My brother was the only one that thought the vinyl sounded better. Since it was a clean vinyl (got it still sealed, no snap crackle and pop) my sister in law was blown away at how quiet the record played. She still thought the CD sounded better.

I have a new (recently released) 180gram copy of Queensryche's The Warning that I play instead of the CD, but that is because the recording on the vinyl was remastered and I think that the 180 Gram re-master sounds better than the what they used for the CD.

12. Why do you collect vinyl - artwork? sound? nostalgia? something else?

Started collecting Iron Maiden vinyl to have it (MANY thanks to Manny for helping me start the collection!!!!)

The rest of it, just to collect a different format of the music. I will mostly listen to the CD's or ripped CD versions, but it's fun to put on a record like back in the day every now and then!

Sonic range - depends on who you ask. Some will say yes, others no

Vinyl is more expensive to produce than CD's today - there are very few places that can still make vinyl records.

Thanks for your answers! I was thinking of getting the Spin Clean. Sounds like it's good to go. I am eager to hear what SD says about the sound quality of that ripped Piece of Mind vinyl. Should be interesting.

I use:
Dual 1219 for everyday listening
Dual 1215-S for 78s
Kenwood KD-3055 that is also for everyday listening. I have to re-integrate that back into my system, though.
Magnavox 1957 Portable Phonograph with a Voice Of Music (mono) player that I use for 78s and beat up records

Both of those have tube amps. I’m thinking of modifying the stereo one so I can use it as just a tube amp as well.

Sometimes, I record and edit it through Goldwave and burn it through iTunes.

I have one of those metal wire racks.

Don’t usually clean the new ones. I use the D4P cleaning system, but for really dirty ones I have a lazy susan that I put a mixture on and a steam cleaner and a modified wand from the carpet steam cleaner to suck up the dirt and stuff.

Yes, but it was a record that wasn’t too good to begin with so I couldn’t tell if it really worked.

6. Do you store your LPs in outer poly sleeves?
On a lot of them, especially new vinyl, rare vinyl, or ones with really nice covers.

7. Do you have special inner sleeves for your LPs? - Poly? Paper? Poly-lined paper?
If it is really dirty I will put a new one in. Otherwise I keep the original.

8. Do you collect picture discs? If so, how do you find the sound?
Not really, though I do have a Black Crowes Warpaint album that sounds really good. It came with a 45 of Bonus Tracks.

9. Do you buy vinyl of new albums? If so, how do you find the sound?
Yes. They sound just as good or bad as the old ones.

10. Do you think vinyl sounds "better" than digital? If so, what do you mean by that?
Technically, I guess cds sound better, but with a nice piece of vinyl it can sound that good. For example, I was playing either AJA or Countdown To Ecstasy during dinner and my oldest son thought that it was a cd until I went to go turn it over.

11. What artist do you have the most vinyl from?
Don’t know about overall, but for new bands it would be Electric Wizard.

12. Why do you collect vinyl - artwork? sound? nostalgia? something else?
Most vinyl is much cheaper than cds. Artwork and liner notes are killer to look at….. and there is a sound that cds just don’t have…. In a good way. Also there is still a lot of music that just isn’t on cd.

- I've been doing LP transfers for years, primarily either items never released on CD or ones where the CD mastering sucks so bad I can't tolerate it. I use a standalone Haflter pre-amp to boost the output to line level and then run analog into the computer soundcard. Back when I used Windows I primarily used a program called "Soundforge", now that I've switched to Mac I go back and forth between Logic Pro and Audacity for LP transfers. A good vinyl transfer from a mint source can blow away most CD masterings.

- It depends on the albums. If the record was recorded in analog I try to buy it in LP format. The main reason I purchase new vinyl is to avoid horrible CD compression, many times the CD will be brickwalled but the vinyl will have minimal compression used. All the recent Opeth releases are like that, very compressed on disc, but the LP's have all the beautiful dynamic range intact.

- Vinyl sounds "different" than digital, but it's a matter of taste from there. I prefer Analog sound in general, whether it's LPs or Reel to Reels, but with 24bit/192khz recordings the gap between analog and digital has been reduced significantly.

Going from best to worst sound in quality would play out something like this...

1. 1/2 inch reel to reel tape running at 30ips.
2. 24 bit/96khz high resolution audio - Blu Ray or 24bit lossless file.
3. SACD or DVD-A
4. LP
5. CD / Lossless file
6. Cassette
7. .Mp3 or other lossy file type.

I have a further question on vinyl mastering. I thought that the fast majority of LPs produced today use the digital master and this is just pressed to vinyl. Is that correct? I had been led to believe that most modern LPs sound like garbage because of this. Is that wrong?

If the album is recorded in digital there is usually multiple masters produced for different formats.

There is the 16bit/44.1khz master used for CDs and .mp3s. These days that mastering tends to get overly compressed to make it "loud as possible" which translates to poor dynamic range and ear fatigue.

LP's require a different master entirely, generally they use very mild compression compared to the CDs...and the LP master is created from the original 24bit source. Often the LP ends up sounding better because of the improved dynamic range.

If the band wants to release high resolution versions (blu ray, etc) that requires another master at 24bit/96khz.

If the album is recorded in analog (many artists still prefer analog and those type of studios are making a comeback now) they will create an "all analog master" on reel to reel and send that to the production plant, so nothing digital ever enters the chain. They will also create a digital master simultaneously.

The only real problem today is the scarcity of actual quality vinyl stock, the problem with modern LPs isn't the mastering, it's the substandard vinyl that many of the cheaper labels use. Stick to at least 180 gram vinyl or above and do your homework on which reissue labels produce the best LPs. Usually companies like MFSL, Speaker's Corner, etc do only high quality reissues...plus recent series like the 'Back To Black" series have been highly rated.

I have bought some 180 gram reissues of old albums. They sound as good as CD's

I think the older albums that were originally recorded analog sound better than the cd's. Some of the newer stuff that is recorded digital sounds the same as the cd to me.

Pat Travers, Elvis, Van Halen, Bob Seger, Scorpions, also a lot of glam metal albums by bands that released 1 or 2 albums in their careers

All the above...also a lot of older albums come with posters, books, stickers, etc...I only buy older albums with the original contents that came with them. Might also add I have alot of stuff I originally bought back in the 70s and 80s as well as a ton of old 45's by artist like Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Beatles, Stones, etc.

I don't generally buy new albums on vinyl, but I do have a couple that were bought for me. They are 180 gram and I think they sound great.

The albums I buy are the ones that were originally recorded in analog, and I think they sound way better than the cds. Even the ones that were remastered on cd.

I mainly started collecting vinyl due to the sound of the older albums. I've only been seriousy collecting them over the past year and a half. I moved about 6 months ago and discovered a used music store that has a healthy amount of new and used vinyl. I've been able to track down some older albums that I wasn't able to find on cd, and figured what the heck, might as well pick them up on vinyl instead, because to me, they sound better anyways. I can easily buy these albums on cd online, but living in California, there are still a good amount of independant music stores for me to explore (vinyl and cds).

What is the theory behind this? How does cleaning with glue work? I'm not a vinyl guy, just curious how that works.

You do this:

The wood glue captures all the dirt, dust and gunk but it won't adhere to the vinyl. You let it dry and pull it off.

I don't generally buy new albums on vinyl, but I do have a couple that were bought for me. They are 180 gram and I think they sound great.

10. Do you think vinyl sounds "better" than digital? If so, what do you mean by that?

The albums I buy are the ones that were originally recorded in analog, and I think they sound way better than the cds. Even the ones that were remastered on cd.

I mainly started collecting vinyl due to the sound of the older albums. I've only been seriousy collecting them over the past year and a half. I moved about 6 months ago and discovered a used music store that has a healthy amount of new and used vinyl. I've been able to track down some older albums that I wasn't able to find on cd, and figured what the heck, might as well pick them up on vinyl instead, because to me, they sound better anyways. I can easily buy these albums on cd online, but living in California, there are still a good amount of independant music stores for me to explore (vinyl and cds).

Thanks for your answers Joe! Much appreciated. Like you, I have a bunch of Rainbow vinyl but I can't seem to find a nice copy of Rising. All the copies that I have found are beat all to hell, so I may need to break down and get a new one.

I use an Audio Technica AT-lp120 direct drive pro.

2. Do you rip vinyl to a digital format? If so, what program do you use and how do you like it?
No I don't rip vinyl if I want it ripped I buy a cd.

Absolutely the quality is much better sounding.

Thanks for your answers Wargod! I have all the Priest Releases except for the first three but Priest are my absolute favorite band. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one that puts all my vinyl in outer poly sleeves and inner poly sleeves. Makes me feel less crazy. Ha!

You do this:

The wood glue captures all the dirt, dust and gunk but it won't adhere to the vinyl. You let it dry and pull it off.

There is a lot of DIY stuff out there on those audiophile forums where they argue about $500 interconnects, make their own cables(I'm looking to do this at some point)and other stuff.

Nice! Thanks for the link Chewie. That dude is hardcore! I'll admit that I'm not exactly an audiophile mostly due to the damage done by high velocity rifle fire to my ears. I would probably miss most of the nuances that audiophiles can hear but I jealously guard my hearing now.

No joke! His cleaning methods seem very sensible to me. There are so many different methods out there that it gets downright confusing. Seems like a whole lot of voodoo in most cases.
