I always cringe when people refer to it as that. For some reason it just rubs me the wrong way (when I was a kid, one of my best friends and his family-from Arkansas-constantly referred to it as that).

I didn't run into anyone who referred to "soda" as "pop" until I got to college. My roommate from Oregon called it that and it annoyed the hell outta me.

I never heard it referred to as "pop" as a kid, till my family went out to Ohio to visit some family friends when I was about 13. They asked my brother and I, "Y'all want some pop?" and we were like "some what?" Very Happy

Utah seems to be a really neutral area as far as most terminology goes. Seem to hear soda or pop pretty equally, though I've always gone with soda.

When I was a little kid my family just called it "coke", regardless of what brand it was. "Want a coke"? could mean Coke or Pepsi or RC or whatever.

Nahh, the generic term for that is "dope." Not that I would know anything about such things, of course *COUGH COUGH*

Hilarious, because I was just going to mention something about the "Coke" reference. One of my best friends growing up had a Mother who used the word "Coke" for anything and everything as it related to carbonated beverages. It was hilarious. They would have Sunkist on hand and call it a Coke... ha ha.

When I moved from Wisconsin to Indiana, I had always called it soda, but almost everyone referred to a carbonated beverage as pop in Indiana. I had friends who would mock the hell out of me, because of my hard vowel enunciation's of sOda. Then again, I got back at them for their mispronunciation of "Wash", which many times was stated as "Warsh", "Warshington", 'etc... There were other hilarious ones as well.

In one of the many geography courses that I took at the University level, my professor showed us a demographics chart as it related to what word was used to describe carbonated beverages. I think "Soda" and "pop" were fairly close like a 60/40 edge for one over the other, with the term "Coke" sprinkled across the country for a few percentage points. Other words that I remember we talked about were "Drinking fountain" (and what other terms spawned from this) as well as "Shopping Cart". I wish I had the link to this website he used. It was pretty interesting...

It was such an Indiana thing. Wouldn't even think of calling it soda to Hoosiers. When my family moved back east I kept the lingo and man did people ever laugh when I called it pop. The only thing that was worse was my pronunciation of roots as ruuts. That actually would get an angry reaction. So of course I made a point of always doing it on purpose.
