I bought See You In Hell on vinyl when it came out and can't remember much about it except that I liked it. Found Rock You To Hell on tape really cheap and liked it. Lust for Freedom was a stand out track as I recall. Didn't know about the album inbetween those two. Need to check them out again. Didn't Grim Reaper come out about the same time as Iron Maiden? Seem to remember something to that effect.

Depends. Judas Priest always looked great once they started with the leathers, and yes, that includes the Turbo era. Mötley Crüe often looked cool, as did Warlock. Steve Grimmet, not so much. He shouldve gone with the basic leather jacket and jeans look, and skipped the hair extensions (he has lots of hair anyways). But he wasnt the worst, just look at pictures of early Saxon or 80's Helloween.

I thought they were all right, the production on that first album 'See you In Hell' is amateurish IMO.
Steve looked like silly git, but has a good voice, but fat boys should keep away from spandex.
Meet Nick Bowcott once at a Paragon's Music Shop, it was an industry/promotion gig, and he was a nice guy, we both talked for a bit and then watched Steve Morse (pre Deep Purple and I had no idea who this guy was) at the time) and then he encouraged me to watch John McLaughlin's acoustic set (he was promoting Martin guitars if I remember correctly) which consisted of one song!! I was 15 and never heard of McLaughlin but he assured me McLaughlin was the cat's meow, I had no idea what that meant either but I assumed that must be a good thing. Anyway he was a cool guy who now writes for Guitar World, Classic Rock Magazine etc.

That is why people make fun of the band now and after B&B was on TV, but GR was popular before that. I think they never made it bigger because of when their first album was released and it just couldn't compete with the other 1984 albums. Their audience were the Troo Medal fans who at time had heard Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus and Megadeth. And after hearing those bands, Grim Reaper wasn't fast or heavy enough and the name/album title came off as "gimicky" compared to Slayer, Metallica, etc. By the time "Rock You To Hell" came out, it couldn't compete with the other sophomore albums released by Slayer, Metallica and Anthrax. It didn't make that huge leap that the other bands did and the troo medal kult started to write them off.
The "fat guy in spandex" didn't help. The band's name, image and sound/style combo didn't work well together. And the songs, while good, just where not as good as what else was out there at the time. Granted, Steve Gimlet has a great voice, but he really needed better songs to sing to make it big. And no Spandex.

DING DING DING DING we have a winner. Grim Reaper were (more or less) a NWOBHM styled band and by the time their first album came out the sun had already set on the NWOBHM... If it had been released two years earlier it might have been a different story.
...but still, either way, fat guy + spandex + hair extentions =

Great thoughts on the NWOBHM sound! Plus, they seemed like posers singing "See You In Hell" compared to what Slayer and Exodus were releasing at the time!

But in Grim Reaper's case I can't agree more. As for them being unsuccessful - seems like no one cared about ordinary heavy metal in 1987, at least in the USA.

In 1987 in the U.S. you had to either be a thrash band or a poofy hair-farmer band, otherwise your albums rotted away on store shelves. Ask Metal Church, Raven, Savatage, etc.

I bought "See You In Hell" on vinyl when it was first released, it was a "budget-price" LP, $6.99 I believe (Capitol attempting to get people interested by offering it at a sale price).
It was enjoyable enough, but like Joker stated, there were too many other great albums coming out at the same time and Grim Reaper was seriously far down the list in quality stacked up against them. The "amateurish" thing mentioned earlier was evident in everything from the songwriting to the recordings, artwork, videos...none of it was really up to the level of quality it should have been...especially since they had a major label behind them.
I liked it well enough at the time to purchase Fear No Evil, but after not being impressed with that album either I relegated them to the "ignore pile" and I've never revisited them.

They may have been kickin' around the NWOBHM/pub circuit with Maiden in their very early days, but by the time G.R. put out their first album (1984), Maiden were already five albums into their recording career.
*EDIT* Our good friend Doctor Wick E. Pedia sez Grim Reaper were formed in 1979, for whatever that's worth. By that time Maiden already had the Soundhouse Tapes out and were on their way. Meanwhile, Grim Reaper didn't put out their first album till five years later.

In a broad stroke I'd say that's the way the record labels viewed it, but I think there was still a good following for bands that didn't fall into those two extremes.
Metal Church did pretty well during their first few albums, Savatage rebounded nicely with "Hall Of The Mountain King" in 1987 and that track was played constantly on "Metalshop". Raven killed their own momentum with The Pack Is Back (not their fault I know, blame Atlantic).

I like the metal look, but as a fat guy (people say I'm not fat, but that's compared to obese people-I AM fat, just not that bad) I know my limits. I wear shirts one size larger and even my leather pants fit loosely.
