The only BM album I own is Immortal "At the Heart of Winter". But there are a lot of trad metal elements in their sound, and overall they are hilarious.

I watch a lot of Black Metal bands on YouTube
It's like watching a musical slapstick or something, there's a certain comical depth and uniqueness to it. Immortal are by far the king of Black Metal music videos

Although I like black metal a lot I am also very selective with the type of black metal bands I listen to.
I generally don't like the frantic , chaotic style of black metal. I tend to be more into bands like Emperor and Enslaved that mix the traditional style with a more melodic and symphonic approach.

I'm a fan of black metal. Norway boasts a greater number of black metal bands, but I find the Swedish bands to be of overall better quality.
The essential black metal bands include Dissection, Emperor, Enslaved, Immortal, Satyricon, Gorgoroth, Borknagar and Bathory.
Darkthrone, Mayhem and Burzum are overrated crap.
A lot of newer black metal bands have emerged since the late 90's and are actually bringing a lot of innovation to the genre. Taake, Watain, and Thulcandra come to mind. They're basically Enslaved/Emperor/Dissection worship bands, but they're doing it the right way.

The US has some good bands like Black Witchery, Noctuary, Absu, and more.
Finland has some great ones as well with Horna, Impaled Nazarene, Behexen, Archgoat, and Sargeist.
I'll add more later.

I refuse to believe Immortal are actually serious about their image and music videos. It's got to be some sort of irony, and they're laughing at us for taking it so seriously. Either way they've got some killer albums and the videos and photo shoots are priceless, so I'm a fan.
I also like overrated crap like Darkthrone and Burzum, though Varg is a racist paranoid idiot. Most of the early Norwegian stuff that I've heard I like to some degree. Admittedly I didn't get into black-metal until much later so this is still a genre I'm finding my feet in.
If you consider stuff like Bathory or Venom or Hellhammer and Celtic Frost to be "black metal," then you can add them to the list.

My favorite form, death metal being a close second. In Times Before The Light is one of the most chilling albums of all time in my opinion.

Covenant/The Kovenant is one of the few BM bands I can stand and actually enjoy. Both Nexus Polaris and Animatronic are ground-breaking albums in their genres.
People laugh at Nagash for being a twisted perv, but if it wasnt for the dude, Dimmu Borgir would have never gotten to where they're now.

I also like "un-black" metal, or Christian black metal, whatever you want to call it.

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant screams out that Nagash did at least some of the writing.
I also dont get all the hate for the In Times Before The Light remake besides the fact it seems like "those" black metal fans screaming that it ruined a perfect album.
