People (especially children) can be sheep. They say to themselves, "This is what all the cool people listen to," when they are kids, and when they get older and don't give a crap about music they buy their kids the stuff that the kids ask for. The parents just go back and listen to whatever was cool back when they were in high school/college, or during the time before they had kids. This is what I always see.
People like us here at this forum give a crap about what we listen to, and can't stand anything less than excellent. In my opinion, at least 80% of pop music falls into the the tasteless category.

not to defend the top 40 crowd, but metalheads can equally be sheep as well. A lot tend to flock to the same releases and share the same attitudes.

I'm rather proud to say that I couldn't tell you what most of the pop songs mentioned sound like. The only reason I know of the artists is because their images are thrown in our faces all the time. That is all the current mainstream is concerned about, image. Musical substance means nothing.

Gotta also consider the times, I think music in general is much more popular now than it was during the birth and rise of Rock so the fact that alot of these bubble gumtists are selling more than some of the greats really doesnt say much to me because the times are different.

Thinking about it, I'm just glad people are actually buying music. Now if they would only buy the actual cds.

I'm so out of touch with the popular music that I don't recognize any of the songs parodied by Wierd Al (except The Doors song, Craigslist) on his new album.

The people that purchase Top 40 singles aren't interested in full albums, they probably don't even own CD players. It's all iPhones, iPods and iPads now.
CDs still account for over 60% of all music purchased, but that number is steadily declining.

That's almost always been the case (the funny lyrics make them even better). However, it does make them much more enjoyable not knowing what those origionals sound like.

the new Weird Al cd is quite enjoyable. Party in the CIA is one his best songs ever.

I have the same problem. I don't know any of the "current" songs he's parodying.
On the other hand, when the Kinks' "Lola" comes on the radio, I can sing the lyrics to Al's "Yoda" parody over it like nobody's business.

I'm surprised it's still that much.
I've never owned a Weird Al album even though I have loved everything I've ever heard. Hard to go back to listening to the original song without thinking of Al's version. Loved UHF too.
I wonder if it is easier for Weird Al today to come up with the parodies than it was back when?

I dont know if it is easier now or not. I think Alpocalypse is a good collection though. He does have a great knack for picking popular songs and totally giving them his own spin. I like his versions a lot better than some of the originals now. I cannot stop thinking of 'The Saga Begins' everytime they play 'American Pie'

You and me both brother. I also feel that some of his origional (non-parody) songs are the best (Albuquerque and Genius In France are masterpieces).

I remember being quite upset years ago during their peak that the Spice Girls broke some record (sales or hit singles or being bigger than Jesus maybe) previously held by the Beatles.
It doesn't mean much to me anymore these days, but still kinda depressing.
