Primus

Thoughts?

I like Les Claypool's bass playing but the cartoony image and dumb vocals ruin it.

Hit or miss. They have some amazing tunes, and just as many boring ones.

I picked up the They Can't All Be Zingers (greatest hits) and I liked it alot, which led me to think I was missing out on some really great music. I picked up Sailing the Seas of Cheese which seemed to be the critics choice and like Eyesore said, it was kinda hit or miss. I'll stick with the greatest hits for the time being. Talented bassist, though.

Great musicians for sure, but man, Les Claypool's vocal style annoys the hell outta me.

They make me laugh though. Anybody remember when they played on "Late Night With David Letterman" years back wearing penguin costumes?

I like Primus a lot, though they are definately an aquired taste.

My favorite is Pork Soda, though the Brown Album and Anti-Pop are excellent in a more traditional kind of way.

Animals Should not act like people (the title is something like that) is a great DVD/CD combo, the new songs aren't so good but the videos are a riot.

i like primus mainly coz i'm a bassist. the lyrics make me laugh as well. his lyrics are like a darker zappa

With most of his songs, he is hit or miss with me except for Pork Soda, I love every song on that album. Other favs. are Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, Jerry Was a Race Car Driver, Sea of Cheese, etc. However, no matter what one's opinion on his music all must agree that he is one HELL of a bass player!!!!

Sailing The Seas Of Cheese is a pretty killer album through and through, I think, though I don't necessarily like every song. Just most.

I really want to like Primus. I've tried. I'm a person of variety - so a lot of times I like oddball stuff like this.

For some reason, I never really could get into them though. Much like someone said. Great musicianship - poor vocals. I feel the same way about Tool. I tried to like them - but just haven't been able to get into them yet.

The only thing is , Les Claypool does not try to sing well (he is more of a bassist and a humorist). His vocals are supposed to be wierd and unusual (like an alien redneck). On the other hand Tool's vocalist is trying to be a good singer.

Yeah, you do have a solid point there. I think I'd give the nod to Primus if I had to choose which I prefered out of the two.

Perhaps I should pick up their greatest hits. I'd probably be able to get into them somewhat this way.

Tool's vocalist is a pretty amazing vocalist.

I love Primus. Primus & Kings X are the only 2 complete collections I have including side projects. I have seen them live probably a dozen times.

I love King's X! Was just cranking their first album a few minutes ago!

Tool's vocalist? Very unique. Aenima is one of my favorite songs both musically and lyrically ever!

I'll check out the greatest hits..why not.

Yeah, I agree with the pro-Tool singer sentiments.

Anyway, I've limited experience with Primus but I like the few songs I've heard. Perhaps I should ivnestigate further...

I personally think the guy from Tool does have a good voice. My point to the guy that said good band, bad vocalist was that if he thinks their voices were bad to keep in mind that Les Claypool's voice was not supposed to sound emaculate.

Les is a killer bass player. I'll try the greatest hits. Primus reminds me of Zappa. I think they are great, but I can only take so much.

Love the bass, and can take the vocals in the right mood. Got dragged to a U2 stadium show one summer where Primus opened. The looks on those U2 fans for the Primus' set really made the night for me.

When listening to Primus I also sometimes wonder what would have been if Metallica had actually chosen Les.

Try the Rhinoplasty Cd, they did a cover on The Things that Should not Be on that one.

As far as TOOL goes, I Love them too! They are like Pink Floyd Metal, and Maynard James Keenan sounds like Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees!

Love 'Em. Frizzle Fry is my favorite album. EXTREMELY talented bass player, really wish he would've AT LEAST done a second album with Blind Illusion.

Awesome band, Les Claypool's fretless bass playing is sick. My fav album from them is Anti-pop.

As for the Tool comments, i persoannly prefer Primus over Tool and Les Claypool's vocals over MJK i just think Tool puts out the same album over and over again.
