| When we signed up for the cable company's Internet service years ago we were given a little MP3 player as a free gift, but I've never even taken it out of the box. I'm not even sure where it is anymore. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| I like my iPod for the convenience of having a ton of my stuff at work, in the car, the gym, etc for whatever mood strikes me.
But I still bring CDs in the car and to work occasionally. I don't even keep the MP3s on my PC after I rip/load them to my iPod. I rip, load, delete. The CD stays on the shelf.

| So if i'm reading this right, you have to pay for them to stream the music? So basically, future iPods will not be traditional MP3 players, you'll have to pay to listen to your own music on them? Well that's a great way to stop the effects of pirates! Oh but wait, what about the honest people who buy CDs?
So the reward for buying music is being forced to pay again? I can see it now. Probably the death of CDs too.

| Why do I find these comments condescending?
“Napster 'trained' people to download music and listen to it on their computers,”
"Reeducating the consumers on how to listen to music.”
Thank you very much, but do we really need to be trained or educated on 'how' to listen to music?
It's like, "Dude, you still listen to CDs? That's so 90s. Permit me educate you on 'how' to listen to music."

| I never thought by listening to just CDs, I would become old school.
I remember when CDs first came out, I was sitting in a pool of cassettes and records saying to myself, now what? Buy all this stuff AGAIN?

| About a year or so ago Apple bought the cd trading service called LaLa (of which I was a member from beta testing to when it was shut down). Aside from trading cd's they also had this very same service. You had to install a program for it to look at your collection, match it with a known song and then you could stream it. You could also buy streaming only songs for 10 cents a piece (or if memory serves me correctly $1 for the whole cd). You could also buy the whole album via download or buy the cd through a partner. I used it for a while and for the most part it worked pretty good. There were, of course some errors which is why I inevitably didn't use it much. I have a huge music collection so that meant that I had hundreds of errors that I would have had to go through and try to correct long hand (not worth my time). Instead I use Media Monkey and keep all of my music on an external hard drive. I guess I'm part dinosaur as I do have a mp3 player but I prefer having the 60+ GB size so I can store as much as possible on long trips. | |

Media Monkey is a great program. I have a Zune HD and mostly use the Zune software now, but I have media monkey installed and still use it from time to time.

| I started using Media Monkey mainly because it's easier to label cd's after they've been ripped with covert art etc...I also have a Zune but I'm so used to using MM that I don't want to go to anything else. Besides, I bought a lifetime license for it. | |

- I honestly don't understand a thing that's been talked about in this thread, but it doesn't sound like anything I need to worry about anyway. I have iTunes on my computer but I rarely use it, I don't own an iPod, and I've never heard of this "Cloud" business.
Sometimes I think I'm better off remaining a dinosaur. "Cloud" is the new cool techy word. Typically it's part of the whole Web 2.0 (<-link) evolution. From what I understand, cloud technology basically eliminates the need for companies and websites to purchase actual physical hosting infrastructure. Instead of powering their software with an individual server or servers, they utilize an interconnected group of servers, which is called a "cloud." This allows companies to shift data and virtual traffic to individual parts of the cloud that are underused, which then nearly eliminates outages and slow response times. I guess it's similar to torrents. When downloading from a torrent site, you're often downloading bits and pieces of data from multiple sources, which then build one album or MP3, for instance. But then there's the whole "take me to the cloud" thing with being able to instantly change photos. Amazon has a cloud, now iTunes has one. I'm not sure if they're utilizing this new kind of technology or simply adopting the new "it" word.

| I read somewhere that you can now buy computers without hard drives, where everything is stored on a server somewhere and then accessed by your computer. I think it's this type of thing consumers should be against. It simply allows them to control us, the same will happen with this. If we're forced to do what they want, then that is simply not right. Of course, there's nothing we can do if the majority of people fall for this type of product. | |

| See, the problem here is that if someone's pirating music, they've probably already figured out some way to do this themselves, or they just don't want it. | |

I don't know about buying them commercially...you'd have to pay for storage...but I know companies have these types of terminals where there is no hard drive and everything is on a shared drive on a network somewhere else.

I like wearing tin foil hats... I'm sorry but I think you misunderstand. Simply, a move to this type of product will happen if the industry wants it to by simply phasing out the unwanted products. When regular computers are no longer sold and older computers no longer work, we will have no alternative to simply let them have access to our information. Make fun all you like, but this is a real possilibity and one you should consider more seriously.

Like pretty soon in the US we will ONLY be able to buy CFL lamps (that you to have call a hazmat team in to dispose of it for you when it breaks) instead of incandescent bulbs? Since it is the LAW. I forget what the timetable is on it.

I forget what the timetable is on it. Canada too, they have been saying that the regular light bulbs waste too much energy and will no longer be on sale at some point in the near future, and we all have to buy the new "improved" light bulbs that can explode, cause fires, contain mercury in them which I don't understand how those are safer to throw in the trash or blue recycle box. ....but back to the topic..I don't use Itunes, and I don't like Itunes (I tried it temporarily). Anything remotely connected to it, I will probably never use.

| I love iTunes now. I didn't like it at first and deleted it. About a year later I tried it again, gave it more of a chance, and now I love it. Blows Windows Media Player away.
WMP would never shuffle past H. It would always shuffle between A and H. If I manually played a band that began with any letter after, it would always jump to a band between A and H immediately after. So annoying.
