Last night I went to the Tremont Music Hall in Charlotte to catch Sepultura. I didn't have high expectations because I'd rather see the original line-up. But I was excited to finally get to see them live.
I missed local openers Agony Drags On and ended up missing Bonded By Blood too. I got there in time to see tech-death metal band Neuraxis. They weren't bad. But with a 20 minute set it seemed as soon as things got to rolling good it their set was up.
Keep Of Kalessin was next. The early part of their set was plagued by sound troubles. The bass went out first song and was out til the 3rd song. Once these issues were resolved their set was pretty good. A lot of the set revolved around their Reptilian album.
Hate was next. Their set was also a good set. They do remind me of Behemoth in places. Other songs had some really good thrashier type riffs that really highlighted the material.
Belphegor was next. Their sound was so much stronger and fuller than the previous openers. A very thick crushing sound. I'm not into their whole Satanic sado-masochistic image but the band are incredibly tight. They played around 40 minutes and received the best crowd response over the openers.
Sepultura came out with a short into before launching into Arise. After Arise they launched straight into Refuse/Resist and Dead Embryonic Cells. Their set revolved around older material. My Inner Self, Biotech Is Godzilla, Ratamahatta, Territory, Troops Of Doom and Roots were all played excellently. They did play two new sogs Kairos (which is the title of the new album) and Seethe. Both songs were really good and reminiscent of Chaos AD. Despite the fact that most folks don't like a Cavalera-less line-up. The band were incredibly tight and Derrick Green did a really good job handling the Sepultura classics. Not as energetic as I thought he may be he did loosen up and get a little more mobile toward the end of their set. All in all it was a great show and I'm happy I ended up going.
