Turntables

SD, your picture doesn't show up! Yeah that beauty is a 1957 Portable Phonograph with a Voice of Music Record Changer in it. It's mono and has some serious bass.

I read that mono needles in these old ceramic cartidges can damage your stereo records. That's why I was playing my beat up $1 and under vinyl on it.

I was intending on collecting 78s, so I decided to get this and another turntable (Dual 1215) just because. I am waiting until a get a Dual 1019(which was a top of the line 4speed model in the late 60s). All of a sudden I have Turntables coming out my wazoo!

Yes, you don't want to play stereo records with a mono cartridge.

I got the turntable my father bought in the late 70's, it's a Marantz 6170:

I now have two additional turntables:


Dual 1215-S: This fool packed it incorrectly so I ended up with a broken tonearm and headshell wire. I ordered a new tonearm and resoldered the wire back on. Never did get a partial refund from his blunder. I think I'm going to use this one mainly for 78s.



Dual 1219: this one had a bent tonarm that I bent back, But I ordered a new one for this, as well. The cartridge was incorrectly wired and gave off this awful hum until I figured out that it was the cart wiring and not the turntable. Sounds Great, though!


I knew that they were both fixer uppers, but the first guy really killed it!! I'm going to make a couple of nice plinths for them, too!

I moved my 2-speed Technics into the bedroom.

I have a stack of 78's but don't know where they are. Though the turntable that can play them needs to be worked on first.
I wish I ripped out the player from my old Sears TV console as it also played 16 rpm .
Though I can't remember for sure if I ever had any old records that played that slow. Keep thinking they were 8 "s.

The reason it was never used commercially was because the fidelity is too low at that slow of a speed. It was only good for spoken word and advanced play time.

The faster the speed, the better the fidelity (grooves are farther apart), though you decrease play time as you increase in speed.

Recently I got some blues stuff. Alot of the labels were missing and they were given in just a sleeve with jo jacket. I also have alot of big band stuff that was my old man's.

It was your post that gave me the idea to look for Blues stuff in this area. K Street records has some Excellent 78s that I'm sure are out of my price range. They had Little Richard on display for $50, the rest were in the back, Blues and Rock.

If you find any 78s from Prestige Records, buy them immediately.

That is where K Street Records moved to when they got kicked off of K street for revitalization(that still hasn't been done, what bungle that has been!). I think they just renamed themselves Rare Records or something like that.

Got this, GE RPX Mono 78 Phono Cartridge to play my 78s with. It's obviously a true mono cart. He says it already has a 78 needle in it, and I can also put a mono one in it to play old mono records.


Hopefully, it fits in the Cartridge Carrier that I want to put it in!

Well, I finally got both of my Duals up and running(I knew knowing how to use a soldering iron would pay off...... of course, I haven't used one since early high school ). Now I just gotta spin some vinyl!!!


The 1215-S is set up for 78s and the 1219 for everything else!


Oh yeah, I ended up buying another portable Magnavox. I was going to scrap it for the small stereo amp, but it ended up sounding great the way it is. It has a Collaro that touches the edge of the record to figure out what size it is. I bought a spec sheet for it and maybe I will build one from scratch since I can use the one in the changer as a reference.

Did you guys know that the long playing record was originally created for use in syncing sound with Motion Pictures in the early development of talkies?

It was a 16-inch platter that ran at 33 1/3 RPM. It was abandoned once they figured out how to add the soundtrack onto the film itself.

Stereo was also developed during that same period for proposed use in film, some experimental stereo recordings date back to 1932. Although it wouldn't be used for motion pictures until 1940 (Fantasia).

It wasn't adopted for home music listening until 1957.

Are you plugging this turntable directly into a amp? I still have my stereo that I purchased in the early 90's that I have painstakingly taken care of and still works great. I am using a Kenwood Stereo receiver.

I also have my original 80's Technics Quartz Direct Drive turntable. I had a few extra needles/cartridges, which I am now out of. Thinking of just getting a new turntable and the Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB Record Turntable. Will it work?

Also, did you replace the needle/cartridge in your new Audio-Technica turntable?

I have that turntable too and WF is correct, it has a built in pre-amp. I use the preamp and plug right into my Denon home theater receiver (in the video AUX inputs)

So then it should work plugged into receiver into the turntable input.

What's the point of the pre-amp?

That's the one thing I hate about buying things on-line is you can't physically see it.
