'By thy Fruits You shall know them'. We are not speak ill of the dead, but son of a bitch alive is a son of a bitch dead. Irony no funeral for the bastard, just as well I suppose. Absolutely correct - we know this asshole by his fruits, which were spreading hatred and fear (well, fear to those who believe him.) Coming from a Navy family, this guy's actions are 100% unacceptable. In NO WAY did this guy and his church act at all like Christ, nor follow his teachings - his fruits are on full display. He taught his own version of Christianity that is completely inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus. As a Christian, I do have to disagree with all the posts I have seen (just open FB up to see them) trying to give this guy the benefit of the doubt (Maybe he repented, he needs God's grace, etc, etc) - much like many throughout history, he used the name of God to control people, spread hate and fear. At the end, he will face his judgement and he's in for a big shock. If I actually believed there is a hell (and not just a concept pulled from Greek, Roman and Norse mythology introduced hundred of years after the death of Christ as a fear based-motivation to get the "church" follow and obey), Fred would get the "depart from me for I never knew you" treatment.

Not me, I don't think he deserves mercy of any kind. I personally don't believe in god, but i'm sure wherever Fred is going will not be pleasant.

Not so sure that he'd hate that as much as you think. I always think it's a bit odd when someone hates gay people as much as he did! I realise that it goes against his religion but so do plenty of other things in this world yet he was pretty much a one trick pony for 23 years!!

| One thing I hope Christians and non-Christian alike can understand (which many don't, deliberately or not) is that that man and that "church" was a cult. Calling them Christian is as absurd as the KKK's claim to be Christian or any other mass-murdering/mass-hating "Christian" group. Claiming something and living/being something can be two wildly different things. | |

Westboro definitely falls under the category of cult.

Hate for Hatred is a perfectly natural human condition. So, I would not call it "ironic". I would call it "ironic" if the undertaker was a necrophiliac. And he only deserves God's grace if he somehow found some grace in his own black heart first. He lived way too long, spoke way too loud, made way too many other people have hatred in their hearts, and deserves eternal separation from his creator....imo.

That's what makes it grace. I won't defend Phelps. I despise much of what he did and said. But I don't deserve God's grace anymore than he did.

I suppose the application of feigned ignorance is subjective. The word "ironic" can be used in place of another in the aspect of "sarcasm", being that is what the term means in context. I find it funny(in a sad sort of way) that people justify their hate due to situation, circumstance, and some superior entitlement they feel is theirs. That mirrors the type of hate that Phelps had.....his was wrong, theirs is okay.....why ? Hate is black and white. Too many seem to think it's gray. Sad as sad can be. . _________________

One reaps what they sow and some call that karma. In the end there is so much more one can do than waste time with hate. _________________

I was given an example on what is expected of me while on the screwed up planet and hate just wasn't anyplace in the equation. You know you'll always be my guy, Jimmy James. And I am the last person to rip on someone for pushing their beliefs. I try not to be judgmental, but I am usually full of shit on that front. My thoughts are that I believe demons/fallen angels/evil spirits/whatever can take human form to mess with us. We'll know who those are one day. But, until then, I have no guilt in placing my own personal tag on people like Hitler, Botha, Pot, and yes, Phelps. So, my question is - If my thesis ends up being correct? Do Satan's minions still deserve grace? A little deep, but I have alot of time and whiskey on my hands.

Being created beings that chose to follow the one who fell from grace, my answer is a sound "nope". _________________

I love it when the biker guys get involved with these clowns. Like the Patriot Guard riding to protect a soldier's funeral. The Westboro wackos may be fools but they're not morons; don't mess with a bunch of bikers who ride with a purpose. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

OR the ones that ride WITHOUT a purpose! Good point! It was kind of funny, back around 1993 I went to a dive bar in New Haven, CT called Toad's Place to see The Outlaws. I was a little bit leery about walking in there by myself when I saw a lot of choppers parked outside but since I'd bought my ticket in advance I figured I'd just walk in and lay low. Once the set started and all the bikers in the audience realized I was very familiar with the music, it was one of the coolest concert experiences I've ever had. It was sort of like I was an honorary biker for the night just because I was a fan of The Outlaws. I don't know if it's still true or not but back then in that area, bikers LOVED their Southern Rock. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.
