| Metal rocks? Do you think the genera of "metal" music has gotten out of hand? With all the groups of metal, Metal-cor, Rap-metal, Death metal, thrash Metal... shouldn't it just be metal?
Either way I am saying there is a fine line between metal... and metal? hmm
I am not trying to start anything crazy, just being humorous and observant. Your thoughts on the subject...

Amen. I tend to let my OCD run wild with the subgenre thing, but in the end, it is all rock n roll.

| Some of the newer bands seem to defy genera any way. I know I'm lame, but I can't tell if any given new band is Metalcore, Hardcore, Deathmetal, or Thrash. Most of the 80s and 90s stuff I can tell. But the newer stuff? I'm not saying it is bad. Some of it is quite good.
When I first heard Arch Enemy's "Wages of Sin" I thought it was thrash because of all the melody, thrash riffs, and the fact that Angela's vocals were not the deep cookie monster vocals I associated with death metal. Even Jonah Liiva didn't sound deathy to me, though the music on the first two AE records was heavy enough. Starting with "Burning Bridges," I would not have labeled it death metal, had I not read about them.
I thought the same thing when I first heard Death. The music didn't seem heavy enough, nor the vocals guttural enough for death metal, so I thought they were thrash. Then I read that they started the death metal genera along with Possessed.
Then there are the bands that blend Metalcore and Death Metal. I always thought of Becoming the Archetype as Metalcore. They had that influence and they were on Solid State which was the Metalcore, Screamo, Emocore capital of the music industry. I just thought they were better than most metalcore bands, but they are death metal.
Hm, sounds like I am simply having trouble identifying death metal. There are some bands that I have heard that I thought were death metal, but reading about them, I found out they were thrash. What the hell? I can't recall any names from this category though.
'Course all these terms (labels, whatever) were coined by journalists trying to explain what they were hearing. It is all arguably metal music. Well, maybe not the metalcore, but you know what I mean. lol
So, what's this fine line thingy you mentioned?

| I find genre definitions to be beyond tiresome; they're useless. It's much more helpful to say "Band A sounds like a cross between Band B and Band C with some Band D thrown in" than to say "Band A plays technomelodicpowerindustrialgothicthrash metal." _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I am not hung up on the genre thing at all, and it seems more people spend time arguing what sub genre of metal a band belongs to or if they are even a metal band then they do listening to the music. | |

| I've grown tired of all the labeling. As I'm slowly ripping my cd collection to the computer, most of it is getting either a "rock" or a "metal" tag. That's as deep as I'm going. I make the judgement based on a simple format of "whateverthef*ckIfeellikethatday". _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

| What sets me off is when I see people flunking a band simply because they don't know how to categorize their sound. "Oh, well Band A would be an awesome Whatever Metal band if their singer didn't sound that particular way, but since he does sound that way THEY SUCK!" | |

| I'd think we should suppose to somewhat establish ourselves as one of the more intelligent breeds of music fan, and thus should be open to at least introductory ideas concerning the science of sound. It doesn't have any bearing on whether or not you enjoy something period, but it can help maybe finding some of why/why not, or just learning things and discussing things in general for the enjoyment of it. I think people involved in the arts, no matter how little, should strive for their stripes in the face of universal mediocrity, laziness, and apathy, because it's always us and interests of ours that take the hit. | |

I am a genre nazi and I don't give a damn. Most of you know what is and isnt metal. There seems to be an odd kind of attitude to what is metal and what is not with some people. Just cause you don't like it does't mean it isn't metal. I've heard many people say that bands like Trivium and as I Lay Dying arn't metal dispite the fact they clearly are. How else would you discribe this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX226Db63ZE&feature=related Although I am with you on the "nu-metal" thing. I don't know how limp bizkit and the likes ever got labled "metal".
