This weekend in Buffalo, it's the annual Italian Festival, a chance to walk down a crowded Hertel Avenue, filled with smug, guidos wearing either white wife-beaters, with fake gold necklaces with charms shaped like Italy, or"kiss me I'm Italian" shirts.Being the christian misanthrope that I am it made me ponder....Does Italy really have ANY good metal bands? I can't think of any...As an aside, don't you think racial pride is stupid?I mean you can't choose what your race is....I don't like Italians and I'm part Italian. I guess this makes me incredibly enlightened or really stupid. Who is Italy's all time greatest metal band?

Wow, your post will surely be deleted. Well, I have an answer, but nobody else agrees or is even much aware so that probably means it's not true. Dave will have an answer, but he only has very select stuff he's open to, so that probably means that's not true. And since you're on a metal board but can't think of any Italian bands you like at all, why start the thread?

There are two things I cannot stand and they are people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the bloody Dutch.

lots of good metal from Italy. just off the top of my head, Cadaveria, Gory Blister, Vulvectomy, Cadaveric Crematorium, & Sickening are all from Italy & all great bands. i'm sure there are many.
if you mean "greatest" as in most successful, then i dunno. Lacuna Coil maybe?

Anyways, there's plenty of killer Italian metal out there. My favorite Italo metal band is probably Dark Quarterer, but Adramelch, early Death SS, Paul Chain, Doomsword, Etrusgrave, Tegen Hart, Bulldozer, The Black and Danger Zone are all killer bands.

Haven't heard much from Italy other than Lacuna Coil, who I dug for a while but on each successive album they've gotten less "metal" and more "modern rock."
I've also heard Rhapsody (who are totally freakin ridiculous) and Merendine Atomiche (fair to middling groove/thrash metal). Oh, and I have one disc by Eldritch (NEIGHBOURHELL) which is pretty good.
I'm sure there must be some decent bands from Italy but I just have never dug really deep into their scene.

I'll second Hyades. Great thrash. I like these guys too...

Eldritch is ok. I have 3 of their discs and they're sorta spotty. Some good tunes in there though. There's probably allot more flowery power metal stuff like Rhapsody from Italy too, but I'm not up on that stuff.

Stake Off the Witch? Odd name, but I like what I hear, you know for Italians. And girls too. Who knew? Good call, De.

Dang. I must be slipping in my old age. I knew that was a movie quote, but couldn't remember the movie.

Aren't Vision Divine Italian? They're good. I bet OCI is referencing Labyrinth.

Rhapsody is the only Italian metal band that I know of. My knowledge of Italian music is in the 70's Progressive Rock scene: PFM, Banco, Il Balletto Di Bronzo, Odissea, Quella Vecchio Locanda, Le Orme and many, many others......
Oh wait, there is Black Jester, but they are a 90's neo-prog/metal band(kind of like Threshold's first album, Wounded Land). I never much looked into the Italian metal scene myself.

Best is a loaded question. Lacuna Coil is the most famous but I do not know if you would call them the best. Some bands I like that have not been mentioned include: Seven Gates, Bleed in Vain, Daedlunus, Thy Majestie, Hour of Penance and Doomenicus.

Metal fans these days have kind of more of a tendancy to want what is considered (by who?) 'the best' as opposed to, ... what makes you happy or what moves you..I've noticed. Not singling anyone out, but it's something the thread made me think of. Remember that all that matters is what *you* think, whether a million or one other persons think the same matters not.
This is my favorite Italian band:
and then after that (also a top favorite band near old Queensrÿche and some others), I've liked White Skull (with Sister De Boni singing), Rhapsody (except for the last couple albums), Bulldozer is good, Dark Quarterer is good. Cydonia had a fairly eclectic second album called 'The Dark Flower' that recalls an odd Helloween/Nevermore mix with a futuristic feel, so I like them. I don't have a ton of Italian stuff, but there does seem to be a lot of good bands and a variety of them.

There was a crossover band from Italy named Hatework that weren't too bad.
EDIT: Both of their releases are more thrash than crossover, but if you were to check out some of their live clips on youtube you can hear some of their other material that was more crossover.
They split up a couple of years ago. Here's a clip from their 2004 release "Thrash N Roll"
and from their 2002 release "Madbent for Disaster"
