You know, I am a fan of comic books from the beginning of time. I've collected and even worked for a comic book company when I was 18, but thing though is this movie was not all that great. Yeah, the art and animation was well done, but the story was nothing compared to how finely written this comic gets. Even the voice acting was weird, for both the original and the second one.
Hell, if you just put it on and close your eyes at least you will get to listen to the music track, but I mean... I rather listen to my IPOD/Itunes at this point. I am not saying the movie isn't fully entertaining. For an artist like myself, I love looking at it, but enjoying the plot is so random you can't even get through it. I understand the movie, but they could have did a hell of a lot better.
I am expressing more of an opinion than a movie review, but if I did have to write a review on this one it would only get a 3 out of 10... 5 being average and 10 being a Shawshank Redemption, or Gladiator quality movie.
Thoughts and opinions on this my fellow H.O.M friends?

Agreed, nothing special, either of them. Good exposure for the bands on it though.

also I think of Gladiator as only about 3/5 but that discussion is for the tv and movie section.

Yeah, the Heavy Metal movie was quite dull. Then again, several of those "made for grown-up's" animated films of late '70's/early '80's were. "The Lord of the Rings" comes to mind....
The Japs did this better with their anime stuff.

I haven't seen "Heavy Metal" in years. I remember when it came out I was about 12 and all of us kids wanted to see it mainly because we'd heard there were cartoon boobies in it. When I did finally see it a couple of years later I thought "Ehhh. Wasn't really worth the wait." It does have nice animation/artwork, but it meanders a hell of a lot.
I remember that it took forever for it to get released on video due to endless hangups with music licensing for all the various songs in the film. Because of that, it was a popular bootleg item at the comic book conventions I used to go to all through the '80s.

I agree, It just seemed like all the hype made the movies into what it was. I don't think anyone would have gone and seen it if, A) they never heard of the comic, or B) there were not going to be cartoon boobies in it. :^)
I just can't understand how, even though it was top notch artwork, it ever got considered a good film. So weird. I guess we have to wait till they make the live action version lol then the boobies will be tangible lol

The only part of Heavy Metal that I really like is the story based on the Blue Oyster Cult song "Vengeance (The Pact)".

It was aimed at the remnants of the late 70s/early 80s "stoner movie" crowd. As long as there were cool visuals and a rockin' soundtrack to groooooove on, they weren't known for being picky about little things like plot, action, general coherency, etc.

I saw "Heavy Metal" some time ago. While adore movie-weirdness of all shapes and sizes I wish they made up their mind and had only one story in the movie. I would like to see a full-movie devoted to the Loc-Nar and Taarna part.

I enjoyed the film. "B-17" was my favorite story about the zombie pilots. Now the sequal Heavy Metal 2000 was totally boring.

I saw it on Halloween night 1981 in the theater. Sure anyone can watch it years later and speculate on it but I saw when it was new and thought it was pretty cool, me being all of 13 years old at the time. I have the Soundtrack and I enjoy listening to it now and then, each song takes me to a certain part of the movie. I havent seen it in years and it probably sucks compared to animation these days but it was awesome back in 1981.

It's been years since I've seen it, but I love the South Park parody they did of this movie a few seasons ago. Don't ask why there is Beatles music dubbed in.

Here's a better clip of the South Park episode. Kinda NSFW-ish if cartoon boobs are objectionable...
