That's actually exactly how it is. Shirley Phelps-Roeper herself has said that they're mission isn't to win souls to Christ. They literally see themselves as Old Testament-style prophets, standing outside of the temple and screaming at anyone who will listen. And believe me when I say that they do NOT do this solely for the attention. They are an honest-to-God cult, lorded over by a domineering and, yes, EVIL human being who has warped the entire family's outlook on the world around them, not to mention physically and mentally abusing his wife and children.

Hate sells...and alot of American Sheep Are Buying. One psycho's hate can generate tons of fear - and fear is the real issue. How do you think White Supremacy groups, Bloods/Crips, Anti-Mexican militias, or any other extremist group can increase membership? I would think converting people to their way of thinking would definitely be part of their agenda. Everyone knows there is strength in numbers.

I am personally sickened that a group would protest a solider's funeral, i do not care what issues one has with the war (pro and con) that solider who died in service of his country deserved to be buried with honor and dignity, ironically he/she died to protect the freedoms of those idiots who are carrying their signs and picketing at his/her funeral.

But see, their message isn't the thing that mainly pisses me off (although that alone would be enough to rile me). You're right, if you ignore them than you are essentially depriving them of the one thing they seem to thrive on.

But what really irks me is the fact that Fred Phelps has commited horrible acts of physical and mental abuse against his wife and children, and he has gone completely unpunished for it.

Guess what - if you read the Bible and believe the Bible (which I am guess you do from this post) God and the way he has dealt with the Earth has changed over the years. Jesus fulfilled the law and the old style, destroy Sodom and Gommorah type stuff is done. According to the Bible, God decided NEVER to flood the earth again after he wiped out almost the entire face of the Earth.

Also the Bible says Jesus fulfilled the law - if you are with Jesus you are covered and a done deal in God's eyes.

Also, notice that the amount of wiping out whole cities and populations decreases and the story in the Bible moves through time. Going off Old Testament "Vengeance is mine". "Kill 'em all", "take the women who don;t produce blood on the white sheets on their wedding night outside the city limits and stone 'em to death" just doesn't make sense since God does not seem to work that way these days.
