People also call speed metal "thrash" which it's not.
Sometimes there is a thin line between speed metal and thrash. A band like Realm are often labeled speed metal. Jimmy Brown often called Deliverance a speed metal band in their early years, yet most fans call both these bands thrash. Ulitmatum are often labeled a thrash band, and we do have a lot of thrash metal influences, but frankly we have as many traditional metal influences as we do thrash. Therefore, if Ultimatum would have existed in 1987, we would have been labeled a power metal band like Meliah Rage or Metal Church.

My favorite genre. The other difficulty is power metal can use NWOBHM influences or vice versa. PM is very inclusive.
I'm going to plug Manticora again, some of you really need to check them out.

To be honest, I'm not really familiar with a lot of power metal. I like Omen's "Battle Cry" and Witchkiller's "Day of the Saxons" EP, are those considered power metal?

I always looked at Omen as traditional or classic heavy metal. Not familiar with Witchkiller.

My name is SlaytanicPOWER (with POWER! in all caps) for a reason. Power Metal is the most glorious form of metal, period! Plus it has a ton of awesome phrases to go with it!
"WIMPS AND POSERS... LEAVE THE HALL!" "FOR THE POWER AND THE GLORY!" "METAL IS FOREVER!" "...IN THE DAWN OF VICTORRYYYYYYyyyyyyyyyy!!" etc

I dont like the speed of most of the european power metal bands as it tends to take away from the melody. Give me the groove with the hooks and cheese and you have a perfect match.

So I guess classic metal is power metal?
To me power metal is crap like Rhapsody ov Fire with all the dungeons, dragons, castles, and battle crap in the lyrics with happy flailing music.
If Dream Evil is power metal, than what is Accept to you all?

Thats all Dream Evil sing about is dungeons and dragons. Its all a matter of what the listener wants to call it.

Let's first define our terms so we're all on the same page.
Euro-power, and classic metal/Amer. traditional metal are very different. More different than thrash and speed metal I think.

Well what is considered under the umbrella of "power" ?
Euro-Flower is automatic.
"German-Power" in the vein of Primal Fear usually is. It sounds alot like Judas Priest's Painkiller album which most people consider heavy metal. I consider Painkiller the proto-Power metal album and any band that is influenced heavily by that album and sounds like it to be either Power OR Heavy Metal. (e.g. Iron Savior, Primal Fear, etc)

This thread has rules?
Other than no bashing (of which I've seen a few instances), to what are you referring Mr. Mitchell?

I love power metal.
For the record, there are normally two kinds of power metal.
1) American styled power metal
This sub-genre is very gritty and heavy! Not quite thrash though. Sometimes it can fall under the speed metal banner.
Bands like Metal Church, Brainstorm, Iced Earth, Eidolon, Judas Priest (Painkiller era), Primal Fear, Manowar, Virgin Steele, etc. This style of music can sometimes be considered traditional heavy metal, though there is a difference - usually more thrash elements.
2) European styled power metal
This sub-genre is very melodic and sometimes fast, though it doesn't necessarily have to be. It also sometimes includes some prog metal elements! This style of power metal is usually traced back to the mid-80s with Helloween being the forefathers.
Personally, I love both kinds of power metal almost equally. Though I'd give the slight edge to the Euro style. I love the melody.

Pretty good definitions. The problem is trying to narrow it down. Take a band like Ravage. I've seen them labeled as thrash. pm, and NWOBHM and I hear all three.

melody is what does it for me too. I like power metal a lot. I think it might be my favorite style but i love prog and kraut/space rock an awful lot too.
