Discussing Soul Asylum in a different post I remembered how much they had changed, and it reminded me of the Goo Goo Dolls. I am sure everyone here is familiar with their mid to later 90's material, but has anyone hear their earlier stuff? It was really, really punkier. If you get a chance, listen to Jed, which was one of my fave's back in the day. The lyrics are also funny. Check out the last track on that album, about James Dean.

I have one of Goo Goo Dolls' newer albums (Let Love In). But that's it.
Not real familiar with their older stuff.

I used to have some. They were okay. "Long Way Down" was always a great song, though.

Hold Me Up is a killer record. Great from beginning to end. It never surprised me that they became a big deal. I actually thought it was pretty cool. Even though I never got another record of theirs after Superstar Car Wash.
Before they got big I found a self-produced tape they put out (I think it is something they sold at local shows) that has an amazing version of "Don't Fear The Reaper" on it. I'm sure it is probably worth a bit today.

I was a fan of their earlier material but I felt that some of the earlier songwriting credits should have read, Paul Westerberg.

that 'Reaper" cover is from their s/t debut...raw and ragged stuff....It's the only one I don't have,
The follow up "Jed" is fantastic as well....as is "Hold Me Up" they were heavier then but yeah, I gave up on them after "Superstar Car Wash"...
If you like early Goo Goo and Soul Asylum, check out a band called Junk Monkeys....great band!!

Love the Goo Goos. My mom played them constantly when I was a kid, so all their stuff is permanently etched into my brain.

You are right... they definitely have a Replacements vibe going in those earlier records.

I think I need to check out The Replacements sometime. I've heard lots of good things about them.
