Hell ya, this band had a unique sound and had a series of winning albums such as 'Blue Sky Mining' and of course their most successful album 'Diesel and Dust'. One of the more unique bands of that era, and one of the most political that did not resort to cliches to get their point across.

"Blue Sky Mining" is my favorite album. All their albums are good though.
Addy, I had no idea that Peter Garrett was in politics now. Cool.

One of my all-time fav bands since I was a wee-punk. All of my punk friends were very political and they held Peter Garrett in high esteem, so I checked them out and found that the music was really original. Been a fan ever since.
I spent 4 months in NZ and OZ in '94. I went to a show to see a band called [I hope this is correct - mind is hazy] Cold Chisel [?] with GUN opening. A very familiar looking guy came up to introduce Cold Chisel. My wife [at the time] came up to me and said that one of our new friends told her it was the guy from "the Oils". I knew it was not Peter Garrett, as he is the most recognizable Aussie ever. Long story short- turned out to be Rob Hirst, who I had a good 10 minute conversation with. One of the highlights from a trip of full of highlights!

Love "The Oils".........but how can i not. They're more beloved than AC/DC in Australia! There's something really unique and Australian that alot of people connect with down here, which makes it amazing the success they've had internationally and in the US where such foreign eccentricities are lost on many.......people still scratch their heads over why fellow "Pub Rock" groups and contemporaries of Midnight Oil like Cold Chisel and the Angels didn't make it.
Love all their records with 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (1982) being my fave and one that frequently tops polls and lists of greatest Australian albums. Secret weapon is no doubt Rob Hirst, he is an absolute powerhouse behind the drums (Go pick up the live DVD Best Of Both Worlds, the guy is an animal). Peter Garrett is currently the Minister For Environment under the Rudd Government he was formerly part of the Green Party until he was recruited to Labor, which has led many to call "Sellout" but i don't buy it. I'd rather have him in making important descisions than someone else.
Anyone who has only heard "Beds Are Burning", check in.........

It WAS Cold Chisel, then. Good. I was thinking it might have been Cold Deisel or something similar. I am not losing my mind after all. I have to say, GUN out-did them on stage that night.

They're the two classic albums as seen by fans, critics and the band themselves, the very first place people should start when getting into them.

Midnight Oil did something when I saw them live that every band who has a hit song should do. They played a rocking version of "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" only to stop mid-chorus and seamlessly launch the opening of "Beds Are Burning". Still one of the greatest live concert moments I've experienced.
I would also recommend the dvd 2000 Watts RSL - The Midnight Oil Collection. One of my favorite music dvds. It has a great feature where you can see the video or a live performance of each song. Unfortunately I see on Amazon where it now goes for some ridiculous price.

Peter Garrett is the Australia's Minister of the Enviroment. He was also a Christian Minister at one time. I love Beds, Forgotten Years, and Truganni as well.
