Besides, you can smurfette about social democracy all you want, but as it turns out some of the most prosperous countries with very high standards of living are social democracies (ie. the Scandinavian countries). Not that I'm a big fan of socialism, but oh well.

You have to remember that the US is a much larger country than the Scandinavian countries. And what works in a smaller country isn't necessarily going to work in a larger country.

Take for example The Netherlands - what works for them in a smaller country is fine, but would never work in the US. They have much more "Group think" where as in the US individualism is very, very important and has been since we kicked the Brits out (and thanks to the French for bankrolling our revolution and supplying some ships/troops to keep the english at bay). The US is a huge meltiong pot of people from all over the world. I can't comment on "group think" in Kurt or Olfasto's country since I have never been there!

Melting pot, but what I find is when people actually do have the opportunity to be their own person..they usually choose to be just like each other. We have less 'group think' as one whole..but in larger volumes..with our wonderful two party system, and the accepted myth of crazy Christians versus sane everyone else, and et al, et al..

I guess I'm more European in my thinking (thus why I tend to be more liberal here in the USA).

There are people like that here in Holland as well. Our system is great in a lot of ways, but there are people that exploit it, so that they don't have to work but the government still gives them money.

With that said, politics are not my thang ya know. The last couple of years a populist party PVV (Party for Freedom) has been on the rise in Holland, and these guys are even known outside of Holland. The party's leader Geert Wilders was on CNN a couple of times if I remember correctly. Their whole program seems to be based on blaming muslims for everything that's wrong in the world. Combine that with a charismatic figure, and doesn't that quite remind you of a certain popular party with a short fellow with a little stache at its head in 1930s Germany?

Yes Sheets, I agree, that is a both interesting and scary side to Europe.
It angers and discusts me to see neo nazis march through the same streets, and celebrate all the horror the nazis did during the war.
And it is extremely dangerous when politicians with such leanings get real power, i think both Austria and Switzerland have scums like that in their parlament.
I also have the impression that there is more racism here in Europe than in the US.
It is difficult to fight these people, they are so good at spreding their hate and fear. And of course we have full freedom of speach so we just have to hope that people see what the fascists and national socialists really stands for.
