Did a search, but the only thread I found was in the RIP. Feel free to resurrect that thread and combine it with this if ya want.
Anyway ... what are your thoughts on Green Day?
Love em? Hate em?
I never really was a fan - but I recently got their "Dookie" album in the bargain bin for just .75c. Thought I'd pick it up as I was in a 'non' metal mood that day.
Anyway - I like it. It's pretty good. It's not earth-shattering, or favorite band material by any means. But it's a decent album from start to finish IMHO.

I like everything up until American Idiot. They've just gotten too pretentious IMO.
The latest one. 21st Century Breakdown has it's moments but believe it or not there are also moment where they try to sound like Queen. I like the goofy power pop sound of their early stuff better.

Try to sound like Queen? Oh gawd!
Maybe I'll just stick to their earlier works then.

Blech! Terrible pop rock. My son liked them when he was a bout 15 or 16. He's since outgrown them, though I don't like some of the stuff he listens to now any better. Still, for a year or so, all I heard from his room was Green Day.

The band cares about how they look too much now, if they go back to their not-caring, dirty punk thing from before, I will listen again.

They have some catchy songs, and at one point I owned "American Idiot", but for the most part they're not really my thing.

Oh I like them pretty well.
I actually think I will be buying more of their stuff.
But again - I have a very wide taste in music.
I like stuff like this when I'm in the right mood for it. And lately, I've been in more of a non-metal mood.

That's when I reach for stuff like Green Day too. And for the most part, their albums are pretty solid until the last two where they're trying to become more than they really are which is a power pop band.

Thanks for the warning. I'll try to steer clear of those newer ones ... unless I can find them dirt cheap or something.

Sorry, but I just can't hear people talk about Dookie without thinking of this:

Back when Dookie came out, I was really into them. I still listen to that album, and enjoy it quite a bit. For a while, however, I lost interest. I wasn't unil American Idiot came out that I got into them again. I resited getting American Idiot for a long time, but after I bought it it became one of my recent favorites. It is much different from Dookie... very operatic. Yes, I could see why some people would call it pretentious. But, I think it is a great set of songs (regardless of how much the radio played them). Some folks of their earlier stuff do not like it, but I think it was a nice progression for them.

I just ordered a copy of "21st Century Breakdown" from Amazon.com.
It was cheap, so I have nothing to lose. If I don't like it - I can always get rid of it.

That one's OK; I like it better than American Idiot but it's still too much of Green Day trying to prove they're more than a power pop band IMO.

I must be one of the few peps on this board who loved 'American Idiot' and I didnot feel they did anything that radically different then what they had done in the past.

Exactly what i was thinking while reading the posts here.. I`m with you manny, love both American Idiot and their latest album. Been a fan since their early days. The only thing they have done different is making better and better albums, most bands go the other way. Call them power pop, pop punk, pop rock, i don`t care. Green Day rules!!

I think they have actually gotten better in many ways. The songs from American Idiot got so much airplay that alot of people got sick of them. However, I don't think it changes the fact it is a great, solid album. With such an emphasis on downloads and MP3s, it was nice to see a CD that worked as an album.

I really like the songs I heard from "American Idiot". I think I'm gonna be a fan of their new stuff! Can't wait to hear "21st Century Breakdown".
Then I wanna track down all their early stuff.
