I remember. Clint used to play Jr. Hockey in Portland and I saw him then. He's had a rough life, shot himself accidentally with a .22 rifle and has struggled with obsessive/compulsive disorder.
Richard Zednik also had this happen and he also used to play for Portland.

No way anyone that had seen that will ever forget it! It was such a fluke, though. I hate when these things happen because the of the knee-jerk rules that always get implimented. It won't be long before all of the athletes, in all of the sports, will be bubblewrapped.

Bengt Ã…kerblom a Swedish hockey player died on the ice of blood loss in 1995 after his throat was cut by a skate. Now all Swedish players have to wear neck guards.
This happened to a Flyers player too back in the 90's (?), but I can't remember who it was. He survived, but it was a scary, ugly few minutes.
EDIT: I want to say it was Mikael Renberg, however I can't find any evidence to back that up hunch.

Back in 1989, Flyers player Jeff Harding had severe laceration of right knee (to the bone, tendons severed) in a game. He only played in 15 career games in the NHL, having his career shortened by injuries. He actually briefly played for Cape Breton in the AHL after his NHL stint, which is where I'm from. Although I hadn't even heard of hockey around the time the injury DeathCult was mentioning occured (I was only three when it happened), I did see at least one Cape Breton game around the time frame Harding was with the team. I may or may not have seen him play (yet again, this was almost 20 years ago).
I used to go to Washington Capitals games and was always sure that at any moment something awful would happen to Rod Langway (one of the last guys not to wear a helmet). Especially given the way he played.
I remember they used to not put nets around the ice. I've seen some people get tagged by flying pucks. Of course, lawsuits changed that.
People got hit with flying pucks all the time, but it wasn't until a little girl got hit in the melon & died that all of the sudden people (and lawyers) took notice and made the NHL put up netting. While it's indeed sad & tradjic that someone died, I do think they jumped the gun a bit and put up the nets seemingly overnight.

I remember that incident. It was at a Columbus Blue Jackets game. Espen Knutsen was the one who made the slapshot. Poor guy, having to be best known for that.
