Their early albums were more of the power metal variety. They morphed into more of a power/thrash sound as they went on. City's Gonna Burn and No Stranger To Danger are their power metal albums.

The master list WF is something I'm trying to keep updated, so if anyone knows of a band not listed there, please let me know so I can add. At some point I want to add years active, essential album(s), etc. Also for those with Spotify, a good third of these bands are available there (of course, pretty much all of them are available on YouTube). This is becoming my favorite subgenre with every band I discover, thanks to everyone here at HOM.

I love many of the bands listed above. I guess I always thought of American Power Metal as those bands who straddled the line between traditional heavy metal and thrash metal. Metal Church is a prime example.
Bands like Riot, Warlord, Steeler, Fates Warning, etc. I've always just considered to be "heavy metal".
Not trying to be a genre nazi. Just wondering if others thought the same thing.

I call USPM 3 "genres" personally: the one you mentioned, the epic metal of Manilla Road/Omen kind and the semi-progressive metal - Heir Apparent, Screamer, etc.

To me , the so called "american power metal" is just a heavier traditional Heavy Metal, that´s it ... I also try not to be a "genre nazi" anyways ...
