| As I've been listening to the mixes of the new Ultimatum CD, I was wondering, what cover albums by what bands do you think are exception and which do you think are lame. (BTW! Wait til you hear "Steeler". That song became Robert's chance to shred!)
Outstanding cover albums! Hammerfall - Masterpieces Guardian - The Yellow & Black Attack is Back Rush - Feedback Steel Prophet - Genesis (at least the half that is a tribute CD) Powergod - Bleed for the Gods-That's Metal Lesson I Powergod - Long Live The Loud-That's Metal Lesson II
Great tribute CDs: Holy Dio-A Tribute to the Voice of Metal-Ronnie James DIO (Century Media) A Tribute to the Beast (IRON MAIDEN Tribute) (Nuclear Blast) A Tribute to Judas Priest: Legends of Metal - Parts I & II (Century Media) Emerald - A Tribute To The Wild One (Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy Tribute) (Nuclear Blast) Jump in the Pit-A Tribute to TESTAMENT (Dwell) I'm probably a bit biased here, but I like a lot of the covers on here besides Ultimatum.

These are good, but there are a few clunkers on them...
The Metallica tribute that Primal Fear was on was good...
Also, there is an Ozzy tribute that has October 31 on it that was pretty cool... |

| The first Nativity In Black CD has some killer tracks on it. I'm not a big fan of tribute albums, so I don't own many.
I did like the Hendrix tribute album "In From The Storm". |

| I am not big fan of tribute albums, I do like the Jimi Hendrix tribute album that detuned mentioned, and another tribute album that was not bad was KISS My A** a Tribute to Kiss.
There are few more tribute albums that I enjoy.
I do like when a band makes an entire album of cover tunes, gives you little insight on their formative years who there heroes were etc.

| You thought those POWERGOD albums were outstanding? I thought that was really bad, worse even than most of those Dwell tribute albums. The ones Shawn mentioned I think were the best by far. | |

The Powergod albums are good. I think the first one was better than the second one though.

The Metallica tribute that Primal Fear was on was good... That would be Tribute to the Four Horsemen. Probably one of the more consistent tribute albums out there. Anthrax doing Phantom Lord on it wasn't too bad either.

The ones Shawn mentioned I think were the best by far. Yes, I liked them and thought they were well done. Good selection of songs. Excellent guest artists. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

One of my favoirtes and more people on this board should give it a go even if some of the bands aren't their cup of tea. The Century Media covers are great (Judas Priest and Dio Nativity In Black (the first, 2nd sucked eggs) Axel Rudi Pell-Diamonds Unlocked (though I'm not familiar with most of what he covers) Hammerfall-Masterpieces (semi-ditto) Jorn-Unlocking The Past (ditto)

| I like Funky Junction- A Tribute To Deep Purple & Ramones-Acid Eaters. I'm not a big cover/tribute album kinda guy. Encomium-A Tribute To Led Zeppelin sucked major gluteus maximus. | |

| Like live albums, tribute albums rarely interest me, but I do like....
Metallica - The 5.98/9.98 EP
and as ult mentioned
A Tribute to Judas Priest: Legends of Metal - Parts I & II
are the most consistently good tribute albums I have ever heard. |

| Slatanic Slaughter / Gateways To Hell 1 & 2: Tributes to Slayer
Some tracks are really awesome (e.g. Kill Again done by Angelcorpse, Hell Awaits done by Immolation, etc) Others try to put a black metal touch on a thrash song and they really suck.
Panther: Tribute to Pantera
Same as above. I particularly enjoy the Domination cover done by Pissing Razors.

| Iced Earth-Tribute to the Gods isn't too bad as cover albums go. The list is more hit than miss for me. I liked their covers of "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "God of Thunder," and "Screaming for Vengeance" in particular. "Creatures of the Night" is enjoyable, too. My only complaint is that the covers are pretty much straight covers (especially BOC's "Burnin' For You"). I tend to like it better when a band successfully puts their own stamp on the song, such as Nevermore's covers of Paul Simon tunes, Metallica's treatments on Garage. Inc., and Judas Priest's famous covers of "Diamonds and Rust" and "Green Manalishi." | |
