| What are some big name bands that never sold out (ie: changed their style of music to sell more records)?
I'll go with:
Overkill Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin (They were never really popular w/ mainstream media, imo)

| I agree that Deliverance didnt really sell out per se. Jimmy just wanted to pursue a different direction and was tired of speed. I mean, listen to "Learn" on up to now, nothing he did at the time was popular at that very time at all. Tourniquet might of weakened a bit with Crawl To China but looking back, that album wasnt really like anything else at the time either. In Thru The Out Door was quite different than anything else Zep had done but in 1979 music did not even remotely resemble that album so it is safe to say Led Zeppelin didnt sell out either. Cant say the same for the band members' solo efforts however. | |

Therefore, this thread is pointless.

| Pink Floyd never sold out? That's right, they just turned into another cover band using the original artists name.... _________________ | |

| I hate the term sell-out, it means something completely different to each person. It's an over-used expression. |

Why do you say that? Ultimatum has been around since 1992. Can't remember ever purposely giving into trends or trying to change styles to make more money. Motorhead (w/ the possible exception of 'March of Die' which frankly, just sounds like Motorhead) Hammerfall (like 'em or hate 'em, they've stayed true to their sound.) Hirax Grave Digger Nevermore Brainstorm Dio AC/DC Raven Anvil I disagree with the first statement about Zeppelin not being loved by the media. In the 70's they were media darlings and adorned the covers of all the rock publications. Some might also say that In Through the Outdoor was a sellout, though I would disagree with that. I think some might disagree with Overkill too, though I would not. They've never strayed from being a real metal band. "I Hear Black" was a slightly more commercial release, but hardly a sellout IMO. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

What is your definition of selling out? If your band is still around after 10 years, have you sold out?

| I would place Iron Maiden on the list of bands that never sold out.
Does selling out mean that production can't keep up with demand.

| Many bands actually never sold out: ac/dc, iron maiden, motorhead, udo, overkill, razor...just to name a few. These guys have remained faithful to their sound. As for metallica, well....The most important thing is that they're back. Thanks God. | |

This question does not make sense. You're asking for the impossibility, since it's about "big name bands" and not underground bands that have lasted all these years. OK, Motorhead, AC/DC might be an exception to a certain degree, but with all due respect to some of the bands listed here like Hirax, Anvil, Ultimatum, etc., do not belong in the "big name band" since they have a dedicated underground following and I'm sure they don't care to change for anyone.

| It depends on the definition of "sold out", Ult said Grave Digger, well Uwe & Chris have stated on the record that they changed the band to Digger exactly for purpose of selling more and making them more acceptable, failed miserably though, cracking album too. Some fans say that Overkill did this with "I Hear black", I personally love that album more than their any of their last 3 albums, it may not have been done for the cash but more so with a change in the times. It's a matter of opinion realy, doesn't bother me anyway. |
