| Something I don't understand alot people say it was doom and gloom for heavy metal in the 90's. But how come there were some metal bands (no I don't mean crappy nu metal bands) that gained more popularity in the 90's than they did in the 80's. Megadeth hit their peak in 1992 the time when Nirvana was a household name and were popular for the rest of the decade, MetallicA were a household name when they released the black album. Sepultura was very popular as well when they released Chaos AD and Roots. Pantera, Prong, Guns N Roses, Queensryche and White Zombie as well and death Metal was in the spotlight as well. I reckon the bands that suffered the most were the poser glam metal bands of the 80's mind you some of the hair bands actually deserved to be ignored (Poison, Wrathchild UK and Warrant come to mind). | |

| i never really understood all the whining either. there was tons of great music in the 90's. true, it was dead in most commercial aspects, but it's always thrived underground. the ones who stayed successful commercially were the ones who were willing to modify their sound for a wider audience. such as Metallica, Megadeth & Sepultura. then there were bands who were commercially geared from the start, such as Pantera & Zombie. i always enjoyed the ones who stayed underground most. that's where the best music has always been! _________________ | |

| There were lots of great metal bands to come out in the 90s. Many metal bands who were good in the 80s got even better in the 90s, such as Death.
And those poser glam bands you speak of did injustice to metal, so it's not a bad thing that they died off.
So metal did better than most people gave it credit for in the 90s.

| There were some awesome bands that came out in the 90's! There was a lot of crap garbage too though. I also preferred the underground stuff. | |

| Metal went underground in the 90s, which is where it truly belongs anyway. Mass acceptance is never a good thing for any style of music. When the mainstream got hold of "metal" (or what they thought of as "metal," i.e. Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, etc.) they squeezed it dry and then threw it aside when it was time for the next hip thing. It turned out to be a healthy thing, however, because it separated the die hards from the fair-weather "fans" that were merely into it because they saw metal on MTV or heard it on the radio. | |

| I'm actually very happy of the condition Heavy Metal is today its neither the most hated or loved genre to the general public. What I mean to say is they'll neither worship you or have a go at you for liking it. | |

| Good lord, you didn't miss anything on that list, did you. In my world, the Neo-euro Power metal resurrgence was in full swing by the late 90's; and death metal was going melodic, so some of the best stuff I've ever heard came from that era. (personal faves, Amorphis, Tad Morose, Morgana Lefay, Iced Earth, etc.). | |

| Noone ever said that metal dissapeared during the 90's, or that there wasn't anything good out. It just didn't seel as well as during the mid- to late 80's. Bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest were packing areas in the 80's, but could barely fill mid-size halls during the 90's. They were still around, they were just not mainstream any longer. _________________ | |

This can be said about every era of music. I think the problem with the 90s is that the mainstream focus shifted on music and metal was buried under grunge, nu-metal, hip hop, and pop acceptance. That left fans in the cold, so to speak. The internet wasn't really the big music discovering tool it is now until the late 90s. And home PCs were definitely not as common. The good music was there, but just hard to find. Now it's not hard to find. And, of course, that has ruined music to an extent. Some may say metal needs to be underground, but I completely disagree. Metal needs to be mainstream. Bands are not lasting because they can't make money. |

| Yes, the good music was their EYESORE but i dont think hard to find at all. I bought 99% of those albums on my list in the 90s and i started with internet in 2001. In those days we bought fanzines, magazines, listen to the radio(underground shows), friends made tapes etc...and like that it was easy to find info about all those cool 90s albums. Of course somebody that didnt realy care about our movement and was just in it for the fashion in the late 80s didnt know where to look for those albums but anybody with a little interest could easily buy those cd´s and lps in their record store or from mailorder catalogs. It was not so hard like many people think it was back in the early 90s or mid 90s for exemple. You just had to open your eyes. | |

| Yeah, the 90s weren't dificult for us obsessed music fans, but the regular music fan is not subscribing to those European fanzines, or going to underground shows, or getting involved in big tape-trading rings. That's just not what they do things. And the regular music fan is the bread and butter for a band; their numbers far outweigh ours.

I am happy you understand my opinion but you are right that a regular music fan is not like you and me and for them maybe it was harder to know about all those great cds being released. THANKS AND HAIL TO YOU BROTHER.

| One thing I will say that was a negative in the later 90's is that that was when "modern hardcore" was getting really big and popular and was starting to bastardize with metal and infiltrate the metal scene...and take away potential resources (as in musicians who might have played metal is not lead astray by hardcore). The unfortunate effects of this can still be seen all around.
