I had a friend that joined a band with some other friends, everybody was in different styles of music, This guys wanted metal, others underground punk, other alternative rock, and other hardcore. They did a Cross over hardcore band that lasted like 2 years, and got plenty of local shows. It wasn't an established band, it was just to learn from each other. I would recommend that, if you can to do something like this

The old members were like that, but they all left to form something "more modern"
