I am not sure if they were still called Shellshock ? much less the names of the songs from 25 years ago, sorry man. I was given a tape and asked to learn the songs and come back. When I came back, there was another drummer there and I played after him...again I was asked to return, but I got busted a few days later and that was all she wrote. It was a long drive from San Berdoo to Long Beach anyways.
How was your double bass skill back then? I always assumed you were a regular heavy metal (not thrash) type drummer.
In 83? I'm gonna guess not very good, because in those early days double bass wasn't used much yet. Hell, even Dave Lombardo never used them until Hell Awaits. Of course bands used them, way before metal was born, but I'm just say in in general there wasn't a lot of double bass going on for the most part back then. Of course James is a trend setter, so I'm sure he probably started the movement and everyone stole his shit only to leave him fuming in the corner crying and dejected, feeling ripped off and left behind.

Just a year later in 84, Lars Ulrich (of all people) used some decent double bass on Fight Fire With Fire. Even Tommy Aldridge is known for it. And he was doing it in the 1970’s.
But I guess overall, most guys were still doing the “one kick, snare hit” (followed by a fill) combo.

I know, it wasn't far from being the norm, just saying it was a rarity back then and wasn't very popular. Still, James probably did set the bar and everyone followed his lead I'm sure.

I was playing double kick in the late 70's. The music that they played in 83 at my audition was nothing like what they did on "We Have Arrived"

Aldridge, Binks, Powell, Appice, Bozzio, Ehardt, Van Halen, Ward, Cobham, Peart, and others used double kick to drive a tune & accent fills back the 70's.
There were tons by 83, hell even Krokus had a double kick tune in 83

Yes, but I am saying that they were used more for fills than the main beat through the whole song. You said it, "accent fills" which is what I was pretty much saying.
Curious, what kind of music were they playing? I remember reading an interview with someone from dark angel, and they brought up that when they first started they weren't near as heavy as they were before they released We Have Arrived, but heard Slayer and decided that they were going to need to become a much heavier band. He never really said what sort of music they played though, that I remember anyways. Just curious if you remember.

Yeah I got that, you're correct, the 70's players and the band's they played on had more diverse songs on the records. For example, Priest had both "Exciter" & "Savage" using different double kick patterns in the beat, then also had "White Heat, Red Hot", "Better Than You, Better Than Me", and "Beyond The Realms Of Death" back in 1978.
Once speed and thrash metal popped up, the BPM shot through the roof & lots of players utilized doing paradiddles with their feet, as well as other rudiments. It is all patterns, regardless if you use one hand, two hands, one foot, two feet, or any combo of the four.

Yup I know, I used to play the drums myself in a previous life lol I never got very good at them, but was decent enough for the time I had to practice. Double bass was my nemesis though. I could only sustain a beat for about twenty seconds before my feet stopped cooperating with me. I'd always end up hitting both drums at the same time lol I can actually do it better now just drumming on the floor with my feet. One of these days I plan on buying another kit. Not interested in forming a band or anything, just wanna play for fun.

Dark Angel in the early days were just a metal band trying to find there way. You can even hear that in We Have Arrived throughout the entire album. Once they started writing for Darkness Descends... they knew exactly what to do.

“We Have Arrived” is just one step more Metal than Shout at the Devil. But even Slayer started as a cover band… no big deal. Thrash was barely just getting started.

No way, it was much heavier than anything the Crue did. Every song on it is killer IMO, and very far from hair metal. Merciless Death,Welcome to the Slaughter House, We Have Arrived, Vendetta, all thrash masterpieces. Every song kills, but those four are my favorites from this album.

Image aside, I don’t consider Shout at the Devil “hair metal”. To me, it’s regular heavy metal! No ballads on it and Mick’s guitar tone is huge!

I'll give you that, but there is very little in comparison between the two bands. I love Shout at the Devil, just about every song is good, but I think We have Arrived blows it out of the water as far as speed, technical ability, and aggression.

Well it looks like the Dark Angel reunion is back in business! The new album is still in the works too!
It’s confirmed that the main reason Gene left Testament is because he wants to finish up the frequently interrupted comeback album. A very good decision! Much more important than Testament (in my book).
A weird little surprise… Jim Durkin was unable to make their last show in April, so Gene Hoglan’s wife filled in on guitar. That’s pretty badass!
