And it's seriously $8.99? Wow. I was expecting it to be around $20. Yep. http://www.amazon.com/Death-Magnetic-Metallica/dp/B00192KCQ0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1220577425&sr=8-1 |

That's probably the catchiest song on the album. My big problem now is the herky-jerky manner in which the songs transition sections. They don't fluidly shift, they stop one thing and then start another. It really is like they just pieced riffs and such together without thinking about continuity of song. The instrumental is the glaring example. "Orion" and "Ktulu" rise and fall like an ocean, all fluid, all one piece. This new instrumental could have been called "Leftovers & Glue" Either way, it's an enjoyable album for sure, but it's not going to end up being the Metallica album I reach to very often. I think it's their worst, after St. Anger. I loved Load and Reload, mind, so that's not a dig on this album. It is very good. |

| I won't be listening to the leaked stuff anytime soon. I've heard enough from the singles to make up my mind. | |

Hey, I'm still buying it. It's definitely good. I would that after the shake-up with St. Anger, this is better than could be expected. I'd say the next album will probably be pretty awesome. In 2013. |

| I listened to a couple tracks on Metallica radio (I'm not going to download it either). All Nightmare Long is definitely the best thing I've heard so far, really like the riffs in that one.
On the other hand...Broken, Beat & Scarred...all it took was James singing "What doesn't kill you...makes you more strong" about 2000 times to put me off that song FOREVER. I don't care if he's trying to be sarcastic, it's just plain dumb.
Quick thoughts on the production: vocals too loud, drums too loud, guitars not loud enough, bass nearly inaudible (shock)...and I have to agree that Lars needs to throw that damn snare drum away...
Anybody know whether this album was recorded in a digital or analog studio? |

I'd say that's a safe bet in this day and age. In fact, I'd be more surprised if it wasn't.

I'd say that's a safe bet in this day and age. In fact, I'd be more surprised if it wasn't. Sadly, some producers just cannot get a good metal sound this way. Listen to the last few Iced Earth albums for a glaring example. Everything sounds thin and weak. |

| Well I downloaded it. I made a copy, but of course once I get it in a couple days when it comes out, I'll throw it away. I'll agree that the snare doesn't sound too great, but it's not like the signature drum set shown in " TheGooch's" sig. Haha. Either way, it bugs me because you NEVER EVER hear an album that sounds BIG anymore. Like when they sound like they're playing the album in an arena or something. Everything is small and boxed in. Even if an album sounds great, or even amazing, they never have that large sound like they used to. A lot of stuff during the 80's really had this. And I've always liked the drum sound that the drums on the first 2 Metal Church albums had. Not the snares and symbals, but when they'd do fills, drums never sound like that anymore. Although that COULD be because of the production values at the time. Anyone know what I'm talking about here??? | |

| The production sounds like a slightly heavier version of And Justice For All. | |

| Mainly because CDs these days are compressed TO DEATH. There's no dynamic range between the loudest and quietest passages of the music. (rip any recent CD into a wav editor and take a look, they are basically a squarewave). This is done to make CDs as "loud as possible", but all it really does is destroy the natural sound of the recording. It takes away the realistic vibe of how music sounds in a room and leads to ear fatigue. |

| All Nightmare Long is a good tune, same with My Apocalypse. I'm disappointed with the lack of bass considering Roberts talent being wasted. | |

| So...will any retail version of this album feature the extra disc of demos? I'm not spending $125 for that damn coffin thingy. I would, however, spend $15 or so a 2CD version of the album. Is that possible? |

| .K.E.A and R.T.L and in my top 5 albums of all time. .I enjoy every Metallica album with the exception of the Black Album. .I think St.Anger, while clearly a messy album, has moments which i love. Especially in the live versions of the songs. .I'm currently wearing a vintage 1989(i think) Metallica t-shirt which consists of a one eyed monster jumping in a fire. .I've seen Metallica live 9 times. Most recently at Leeds festival in the UK. .I've purchased well over 10 different lossless albums from 'LiveMetallica.com'.
With all that said, i think it's fair to say that i'm not a Metallica hater.
So, onto the new album..
i've had it one full day and it's not doing anything for me yet. It's a bloated, over-long, boring, repetitive mess of an album with plenty of glimpses of greatness buried deep within.
I'm actually amazed at the way the album sounds. It's just so.. flat and dull.. and uhh, sort of muffled(?). The one thing they should have realized from St. Anger is that it's absolutely impossible to purposely manufacture a 'raw' album and make it sound good. Something is either raw, or it isn't.
Is that drum sound meant to be a "screw-you" to the world?. Is Lars trying to prove some kind of point?. I can't believe that they listened to te final drum-track recordings and decided that it's exactly what they were looking for. I'm genuinally confused. Surely that would have been the first thing they would have wanted to get right.
I'll give it a full 8 hour rotation tomorrow at work. That's always the best place to break in an album. At this point i seriously think the new Slipknot might be better. Christ have mercy.
