You are 100% correct, my good man. Just not Kill 'Em All good.
I think it sounds quite a bit like Kill Em All, actually.

I wonder how much of these opinions is based on the production. For instance...
If "My Apocalypse" had that kind of production--and I think that is one the most crushing metal albums of all-time--would so many people be complaining? I think what these new songs lack is that quality that sounds and also feels heavy. They're heavy songs, but they don't really brutalize. And they could.

No stoning. I hear when people get to be your age, the hearing is the first to go, so I understand.

I'm not going to make any judgements on the overall production of DM yet, considering all I've heard so far are sub-standard versions of Cyanide & My Apocalypse. Once I get to check out a lossless version I'll feel better about judging the production qualities.
My Apocalypse sounded promising, if a little "forced" in execution. All of the songs I've heard so far have interesting segments but they really don't have that truly organic vibe I'm looking for.

Damn I remember hearing that song for the first time. Its still as awesome today as it was back then. If Metallica sounded like that now I dont know what I would do.
A good production is always the first thing most people will judge when listening to anything. I tend to be one of those people on occasion. If the new metallica album had the production of the black album I think this would probably one of the best if not the best metallica album. Sound wise I think the black album is the heaviest.
The songs that ive heard so far have really been sticking in my head and every now and then i'll start humming one of them. The production of the new stuff reminds me of System Of A Down in a way. Its heavy yet its a little flat with the guitars. Now Rick Rubin produced a bunch of slayer albums and they were all pretty heavy sounding to me so I dont know why they didnt do the same for Metallica.
Either way good or bad production its still high above st. anger. Im 100% looking forward to this album. In fact i'll be buying the coffin package.

System of a Down's debut definitely has a similar production quality to what "My Apocalypse" has. But here's the thing, Metallica say there is an issue with what they released and people are scoffing at that. Remember all the trailer clips and such? Those clips sounded great! So maybe there is an issue with the mix?

All I've heard is an online version in 44 kbps. Not really enough to make a judgement call on the production at all.
The song is good, though, and very much like a song from Kill Em All in style, feel and execution. The production values remain to be seen.

Would it help a band as big as Metallica to release crappy-sounding songs before the album drops, making everyone thing the production sucks? St. Anger was universally slammed because of its terrible production. So if everyone is creating a buzz about Death Magnetics apparently crap sound, how much of a media storm would it be if on release day the album sounded killer?
Good marketing?

I wouldn't put anything past them, Metallica is one of the better marketing firms out there.

I just read some reviews that said the drums were mixed a little too high and also something about the guitars. Im sure that the actual cd will sound a thousand times better than these mp3s. Ive been listening to the 2 songs a lot the last couple of days and the sound weaves in and out so hopefully thats just cause of the crappy files. Things like this make me realize why I really hate downloading songs. The music looses so much. Either way I just pre ordered the Casket box set so now i'll just have to sit and wait. One thing sucks though I dont think it will be shipped out til after the release date but i'll atleast get a free download of the album. I hope the box set is worth it. Oh another I cant believe they charged tax. Free shipping but they threw the tax on there which I was surprised to see. So it came out to like $143. Dont tell my girlfriend.

You just paid for Kirk's weekly salary that Lars and James gives him. You're really making a difference in a man's life!
Side note: As of today, I'm more excited about the new AC/DC track.

I will probably wait until it is used unless I can get it for a cheap price somewhere. I too thought the mp3 songs were ok interest wise. I am hoping the studio versions jump out at you more. I am taking the more wait and see approach (like with the new Crue) since I am sure before too long there will be a ton of used Death Magnetics out there... Although I have to admit I said the same thing about Judas Priest's new one and I did buy that new from Best Buy...

I don't know about all this MP3 talk. MP3s these days don't lose much quality unless they're posted somewhere like MySpace. Guess we'll see soon.

The production is going to be this album's biggest downfall.
