- IMO, if the band's name is also the name of a person in the band (and Alice Cooper is Vincent Furnier's legal name these days) it goes under the first letter of the last name.
If the band name is a person's name who is not in the band (i.e. Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep, Steely Dan, Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd) I file it under first letter of the first word in the name.
But don't burn yourself out over it - as long as YOU know where you keep it, isn't that all that really matters? (OCD traits notwithstanding)
Here's another nice little quirky question: with cd's, do you have to spin the cd around so it's straight in the jewel case when you put it away? And with vinyl, do you make sure that the albums are stored Side A facing front and label straight?
I do. Yeah I do that as well. My wife says I have a problem. I now have proof I'm not the only one. As for storing, I go by last name if the band name is the same of a person in the band (Lizzy Borden excluded for some reason).I don't think I have any cds by bands named after ficitional people (at least none I can think of off the top of my head).

| When I rip my cds onto my computer, I sort it alphabetically by last name. In my cd racks, I put my music wherever, as long as artists' cds aren't seperated. I just remember where everything is. |

| I just had a difficult one to file. Loud 'N' Nasty. Of course it goes under the Ls but where? _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I do it like the record stores do; alphabetical by last name and bands alphabetical by first letter. My friend does it the weirdest way I have ever seen. He categorizes by first latter regardless of name of artist or band and then puts solo artists with their respective current or former bands. Example: Ace Frehley goes with Kiss and Bruce Dickinson goes obviously with Iron Maiden. Pretty crazy in my opinion. Peace. | |

So where would you put Alice Cooper? Is that a band or an artist?

| I go by first letter, always. Otherwise it would be too confusinf with all the "fake" names etc. Another problem are all the bands stating with The, like The Crucified etc. I simply ignore the The, and use the first letter in the next word. I have numbers as a separate category, but alphabetize them in that category using the first letter in the written version of the number. My biggest worry is where to put the Split CD's, like the Emerald/Oracle thingy I have. _________________ | |

| In my collection, its like this: ALICE COOPER go with the A and not with the c. THE EXPLOITED for exemple goes with T, not E and that counts for all the bands that starts with THE. | |

So where would you put Alice Cooper? Is that a band or an artist? It's a name, albeit a fictional one, so my AC cd's are under C.

The "T" section of your CD shelf must be HUGE then! As for me, my CDs are arranged alphabetically by band/artist name, and where I have multiple CDs by the same band/artist, those CDs are arranged in order by year of release. I file Lizzy Borden under "L" since it's the band name as well as a name of a band member. (Although I'm pretty sure that it's just a stage name and that Lizzy's driver's licence doesn't list "Lizzy Borden" as his legal name...) Any band name that starts with "The" gets filed under the first letter of the SECOND word (i.e. The Cult go under "C," The Donnas under "D," etc.) Tribute albums get filed along with the other CDs by the band being tributed (i.e. my Dio tribute album is in with the Dios, my Maiden tributes are in with the Iron Maiden CDs, etc.) Non-tribute compilations/soundtracks/Various Artist CDs (which I don't have many of) are filed according to the first letter of the title. For example, my "Shocker" movie soundtrack is filed under "S." (One of my friends just piles such CDs at the bottom of his rack in what he calls the "Random Various Artist pile," haha) I guess everybody has to figure out their own system that works for them!! _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

I do. Yep,Trog my OCD tendencies are as bad as yours. The cd has to be straight in the case. I do this too. And if the band's name is written in a different direction than the rest of the info on the cd (record label, track listing, copywrite info, etc.), it gets spun so the majority of the text is horizontal and proper. Any bands that start with "The" get sorted by the first letter of the band name, i.e. The Cult would be in the "C" section, not "T"

| I do the straight in the case thing too. I also switch out CD cases every 5 or 6 years as well. I hate a dirty case. But now I have bought so much stuff in the past year, I don't know if switching the cases out is an option any longer. |

Ace Frehley's KISS solo album is with my other KISS albums under "K", but his Frehley's Commet stuff and other solo works are in the "F" section. Dickinson and Halford solos works are in the "D" and "H" setions, apart from their respective bands.

Dirty, sticky, broken or otherwise damaged jewelcases or liner trays are almost immediately replaced.
