| Well after all the trouble OD had with VOH. What do you think? I have never pre ordered an album. I usually wait long after the release date... | |

| I think a band should only offer an album for pre-order if it is in the can and on the way. Otherwise it is counting your chickens before they're hatched. | |

| Preordering makes sense if there is a limited protion with some extras (free patch, etc) but as Jim said the band/label should offer preorders ONLY after the CD has been sent for manufacturing and the digital proof approved.
It is a big no-no if a label offers early preorders in hope to raise funds for making the release. This almost always ends up on a wrong side.

| I agree pre ordering for production costs is a bad idea... | |

Otherwise it is counting your chickens before they're hatched. Couldn't agree more. I have the Once Dead album on pre-order from Open Grave since last July! That's crazy, since I thought the album was going to come out last September. It's not cool milking money from your fans and supporters to get the album done. Actually, it's pretty :defleppard:

:defleppard: As buyer I see preordering as a way of expressing your support by helping the band/label to recoup some expenses in advance. In return it is always nice to get some small extra like getting a free patch, button, your CD signed, etc. That's why I always preorder stuff when possible and would never make an issue if there is a reasonable delay, but 10 months is merry indeed. If you preordered it last July and still waiting I'd call that not pre-ordering, but rip-offing... plain and simple! If the label had any integrity they should have refunded everyone by now along with their deepest apologies.

| Ultimatum have offered pre-orders on t-shirts, posters, and other things people requested. We did pre-orders on our Til the End! EP because it was to be a limited, edition release. Those who didn't pre-order, didn't get one.
However, on our full length album we did not do pre-sales.
I have pre-ordered some things from bands I want to support, but for the most part, I wait til the album is released. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| I pre order occasionaly but mostly only on amazon. I did it once or twice else where like newbury comics to get some autographs but I never really ran into any problems except with impulse music where I will never buy from again. If I know its something that none of the stores will carry here or a limited edition then i definetly pre order. I actually just pre ordered the Carnivore metal mind re issues on amazon. | |

Ditto. I hardly buy anything on the day of release anymore either. I'm a patient, cheap man.

| I pre-ordered the Black Sabbath - Hammersmith CD. Only 5000 were pressed and if you didn't pre-order the day it became available, you didn't get one.
Some band's offer pre-orders because it's the only way they can raise the money to make the merchandise they are selling. In Ultimatum's case, people wanted Into the Pit shirts months before the CD was even available. We asked if people wanted to pre-order them to come up with the money and they did. So, it worked out well. We were able to get the shirts and people got the shirts they were asking for.
We've never ripped off anyone on any pre-order we have done.
I've never been ripped off when doing a pre-order. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| I like to pre-order whe the band is going to sell the album to the band earlier than what is suposed to.
I also like to pre-order when there is an special package with the release.
But I usually wait until the day of it's release, and buy the albums on the same week it has been released

| I've pre-ordered a lot of CD's, and had no problems with it, yet. That is, I'm still waiting for that Once Dead CD I've heard so much about! Can you believe, I ordered that thing when Scott was still in the band! And now it's not even the same band anymore!! They still owe me a t-shirt I ordered 2 or 3 years ago also.... _________________ | |

| Pre-ordering is good for me because I'm all the time forgetting release dates. That is, unless peeps here beat it into my head like this new Testament album. |

That's the only one I regret not pre-ordering. D*mn my procrastination! I know a guy that used to work at Rhino Records and I was hoping he'd come thru with a copy for me, but I guess that was a pretty hot item.

I'll buy the Once Dead album when it comes out. I usually pre-order from places like cduniverse, where I know there is a definite release date. This is a lesson learned.
