The guitar riff for me.

A good riff, and if the vocals aren't too annoying, then I tend to dig it.

I like motion in my music. I think that's one reason I shy away from (read: hate) most metalcore. Yeah it's heavy, but it doesn't move and sounds dead. I also prefer songs to have a personality. I also like variation on a theme, with minimal exact repetition. Also tension and release, and just killer transitions within songs. Like you know that part in Bad Omen (Megadeth) where the guitars are descending and Mustaine says "ohhh bloody blasphemy". Then that solo just explodes out of that mess. Amazing. Orgasmic, if you will.

I think these are some reasons I am never really all that happy with straight up brutal death metal. I love death metal, but these days it seems to have to be somewhat progressive to make me happy.

...and Thrash is just the best!

I think one of the attractions of obscurity is that the music doesn't get worn out from hearing it on the radio, or having your friends play it endlessly for you, etc. It stays fresh longer IMO.
