Any Tool fans here? I've yet to get any of their albums, but I hear they are a very technical band, not to mention a little weird. They seem to be a very popular band at my school, so I was wondering what you all thought about them.

I have their most recent release, 10000 Days. A good album indeed, although I feel there's a bit of filler that drags on in it. Still, having listened to a large amount of Tool's stuff, they're definitely a strong band, somewhere between prog-metal and alt-rock. It works well in moderation, but they can get annoying in large amounts. They do put on a great live gig, though.

I generally find Tool to be too prog for my taste with the exception of the Aenima album which I think is great.

Early on I tried to get into this band but just never truly "got" them, I guess. (that stop-motion video for "Sober" still gives me the creeps though... great vid!)

I have tried to like Tool as they seem to have some of the most dedicated love fans out there. But all the material i have heard lately has all seemed like the same recycled music. They have some killer older material when they didnt seem as proggy. But as of lately they seem to get repetitive.

That's how I feel. Generally Tool doesn't do it for me but I LOVE that song and I think those are some great lyrics!

I listened to Aenima a few times about six months ago, and found about half of it to be really good and half to be just okay.

'Stinkfist' and 'Sober' are excellent songs.

The first two are excellent, but then they started to sort of lose a little bit of their greatness to too much self-indulgent crap. I still love the band, but the last three albums have had a lot of filler. Sure, cool filler, but entirely unnecessary in my book. 30 minutes of subtle sounds and noises interspersed with real songs isn't my idea of funny. Haha.

But take all that away and you've got some awesome music.

Tool is a very good band. I saw them at Madison Square Garden a month after 9/11. They put on a fantastic show. The music was fantastic. It was interesting to see Maynard singing off to the side and not at the front as most lead singers do.

I'm a pretty big fan. I like Aenima and Lateralus the best. Heard some of their last one, but I'm not into it as much. Some good songs on the first two albums as well.

That's my take too. The last several have really overindulged in prog wankery IMO.

I have the first 3 or 4 albums. Thay are very talented and pack a lot of emotion and feeling into their music. Well worth purchasing some used cd's in my opine.

I have the first 2 or 3 along with Opiate, other then that, they really don't interest much. Saw them live for 10,000 Days, bad show.

I wouldn't even call it prog wankery. I would say it more of this ambient new wave noise crap. Or just noise. Haha. There's not a whole lot that progressive about it. In fact, the band's not all that progressive to begin with. Weird, yeah, but not quite what I'd call progressive.

Progressive Grunge anyone?

That label i felt always fitted them well, particuarly their early albums. Although not fan.

But good on them for being so successful with something that's so out of the mainstream. One of the commercial radio stations was kinda forced to play one of their songs because of the huge success it had, it was like 8 minutes long or something talk about radio killer! They reluctantly played it at night probably sandwiched between the Pu$$ycat Dolls and Matchbox 20 or the stuff they usually play.

On an odd Tool related note, there was a story on Blabbermouth yesterday about Green Jello reuniting (remember, the joke band with the one hit "Three Little Pigs?") ... and the article sez that back in the day, Tool's drummer was a member of Green Jello, and Maynard Keenan sang back up vocals on a couple of tunes on their "Cereal Killer" album.

How bizarre is that? I had no idea that there was any connection between those two bands.

I think their album Aenima is one of the most boring albums ever recorded. For the life of me I can't figure out why so many tool fans praise that album. I did however like the newest album. The one before that was about half and half though, but it does have my favorite song of their on it....I don't remember the name...I call it the "pieces fit" song.
