| Are Box Sets a good substitute for not owning a bands entire CD catalog? For instance I just bought Megadeth's Warchest. | |

| The Led Zeppelin discography box set rocks as does Aerosmith's Box of fire. I recommend both rather than collecting individual discs. |

| I'd say they would be, especially if you're just getting into them. I'd do it myself but I can only afford indivdual CDs at this time and box sets are pretty pricey. | |

| I guess it depends on the band... $$$ strapped I've started to pick up 'Best Of's' and such. Box sets can be great introductions... Judas Priest 'Metalogy' is a good one and their is a 3 disc Scorps one floating around that's pretty good.. AC/DC's Bonfire is more of a Bon Scott tribute than a band introduction, but great none the less... | |

| Not strictly as substitues, no way. Unless, of course, it includes all their albums. Warchest is more of a collection of songs, right? Something like Gamma Ray's Ultimate Collection would be fine. It has their first six albums, all with bonus tracks. No need to buy the individual albums in this case. |

| I don't think of them as substitutes, I mean if you really like a band, and the box set consists of some of their albums, I see no reason to not buy it. I mean I have Black Sabbath's Black Box and TSO's Christmas box set. I see them as great ways to try and get every cd by some of your favourite artists. | |

| Well I bought Black Sabbath's Black Box and eliminated the need to buy 8 individual albums right there. | |

| Well, The Stooges 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions is pretty interesting, if you're into that sorta thing. |

| Box sets tend to include rareties and out-takes that may only appeal to hard-core fans of that particular artist, so it may not always be a great representation of the artist overall career. Also, for an artist that's been around for awhile, a box set might encompass material from times that their career took a dip in quality or strayed from their original sound. For example, Alice Cooper's box set includes allot of material from the 80's, which in my opinion, isn't nearly as strong or focused as his work from the 70's or later 90's. For someone like that, you're better off getting a greatest hits or just picking up stuff from the 70's. | |
