We refer to our music as classic Hard Rock, but we do love that first LA Guns album! - rattpoison wrote:
I spend many hours splitting hairs over bands like these, believe me. The whole recent trend/loose style of the 80's sleaze glam 70's punk crossover of which this band are a part of whether they want to be or not falls flat to say the least. well, you did say the least - rattpoison wrote:
- This style ranges from the great (Silver, Trashcan Darlings), the good (Black Halos, Stereo Junks), the okay (Towers Of London) the bad (Hardcore Superstar) and the ugly (Vains Of Jenna). This genre's undisputed classic album Total 13 by the Backyard Babies was forged a decade ago, and unfortunately nothing has matched it since. Anyway the Main Line Riders is somewhere between the bad and the ugly sorry to say. Although gotta give them props for their championing of Junkyard.
That's life in Hollywood, where what's bad just seems to be good, that's life in Hollywood, I love the place...am I misunderstood? - rattpoison wrote:
And you gotta hate those music label bios that chuck in Hanoi Rocks with L.A. Guns, Faster Pu$$ycat, Skid Row with out blinking an eye. Sure Hanoi is an influence on this band but it doesn't come out in their music. I generally think its a play for credibility or as Shiney suggested a hook for suckers like me who like anything that orbits the Hanoi Rocks axis. Yes, but you must understand, sir, that when Hanoi Rocks was barely being heard in the USA via a couple videos from their attempt at turning in the then fairly standard hard rock performance of TWO STEPS FROM THE MOVE, the large majority of our citizenry had never heard the punk influenced material of their previous releases. Me...I love their TSFTM work...I really love it. And while I own every piece of music the band has ever released, that album is the one I turn on the most. It is the album that influences what we do. You may prefer their earlier stuff, but to say that Hanoi doesn't come out in our music is a bit of a silly, snobbish thing for you to say. Our vocal hooks are more obvious, more immediate, more first album Skid Row then they are Hanoi Rocks and my guitar riffs owe more to Malcolm Young by way of Johnny Ramone then they do Hanoi Rocks, but I'm here to tell you that my guitar solos owe a lot more to Andy McCoy's work then they do any other guitar player's work of the era and that is why we find it appropriate to cite them as an influence. later...Cliffy _________________ http://www.steinhausmastering.com

later...Cliffy I don't think saying Hanoi Rocks doesn't come out in your music is a silly, snobbish thing to say. It doesn't quite simply. I listened to the songs again, and i couldn't hear it. Listened to the leads, and compared them to Mr. McCoy at his most metallic and still didn't hear it. I mean L.A. Guns, Faster Pu$$ycat, Skid Row etc. were all influenced by Hanoi Rocks but never did it come out in their music. I personally think your band sounds like LA late 80's sleaze ala Junkyard/L.A. Guns meets the boogie riffing of AC/DC and the urgency of the Ramones. But uneventful and lacking charm/character. But as a debut is a 'solid' start.

| Go listen to Andy's solos on the TWO STEPS FROM THE MOVE ALBUM...it's in there.
But yeah...I won't deny that referring to us a Junkyard/LA Guns meets the boogie riffing of AC/DC and the urgency of the Ramones is an incredibly accurate description.
I owe ya one for that.
The "uneventful and lacking charm/character" tag...can't get on board with ya there.

| I still don't hear the likeness to Andy's solos, if i was to compare i hear Brian James style leads from Method To Our Madness by Lords Of The New Church. Which may be more of a compliment than the Andy McCoy comparison!
But it's all splitting hairs. I'm just not a fan of press releases who throw in Hanoi Rocks or New York Dolls randomly for bands so clearly indebted to late 80's LA sleaze. Because every time i listen to these bands i never hear it. Influence and Sound are 2 different things.

| This is a great disc. Being a big fan of bands like Junkyard, Kix, and the like, Main Line Riders is right up my alley. I was listening to them on the way in to work today and the whole disc smokes. My favorite tracks are Throwing Bones to the Wolves and We are the Ready Ones. If you like your music with Gibson SGs, good hooks and catchy melodies then MLR is right up your alley. The disc could have used another ballad and definitely could have been a bit longer, but I really like it nontheless. | |

| The more I read about this band the more I think "I gotta check this out"... I keep hearing Ramones, Junkyard, and Kix references being thrown around and I dig all three of those bands... will have to investigate... I never did look into the Huntingtons, but always wanted to check out one of their two Ramones "tribute" albums that they released in the 90s. Hey Cliffy... got any extra copies of those around that you might wanna lay on a Ramones lovin' brother?? _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| Hey Keith...glad you're likin' the album. As to the length of the album...I kinda have a hard fast rule on that.
Always leave 'em wantin' more.
Ult...understood.
Freddy...I only have my personal copy, but it's fairly easy to find at an el cheapo price (see eBay).

| Got my copy yesterday. Have listened once: Now that I've had the whole album at once my "snapshot" opinion stands. I like it a lot. It scratches an itch I have for "this kind" of music. I've read lots of reviews that say something along the lines of "nothing groundbreaking, you've heard this before.....but it rocks!". That's about right! That's how I like my hard rock/metal anyhow. Meat and potatos! No wanking! AOR-Prog, Power-prog, Prog or Tech-Death, Tech Thrash - just not for me!! I heard many of the aforementioned influences such as AC/DC (in vibe if not actual sound) and I still stand by Buckcherry!! Just do. I hear something in there that reminds me. It's not a bad thing!! I hear what I think is LOTS of Punk influence and style. The guitars have that fast "chuck-a chuck-a chuck-a" punk rhythm at times. It's good! Maybe a couple songs that slow down too much for my tastes but there's at least 6-7 great tunes. Me likey! Do some shows in your home State boys!!! (Abilene!!) | |
