Here are my song by song thoughts. Nothing too in depth, but then I'm not a deep thinker.
Through the Eyes of the King - Very Hall of the Mountain King-ish. It sounds like an updated version of the 80's 'Tage. Daddy likes it!
Maniacal Renderings - This one is a little dry other than the piano lines and guitar solos in the middle. Overall satisfying enough.
The Evil Beside You - Nice dark beginning piece. This sounds like a Gutter Ballet remnant. The only think missing is a Criss solo. Absolutely awesome!
Time To Die - This sounds like a Jon Oliva song like those featured on Wake of Magellan. Not bad, not superb. I like it.
The Answer - This sounds like it should have been on "Streets". As the Oliva's could write great up tempo songs, their ballads are usually just as good. This is no exception. Sounds like an ode to Floyd in part of the song. It should be obvious. Awesome song! My second favorite.
Push It To The Limit - I don't really care much for this one. Its kind of a bland fast number. They all can't be winners!
Who's Playing God - This sounds like classic Jon Oliva Queen-esque symphonic stuff. I dig it. I LOVE that organ solo. You just don't hear awesome stuff like that much!
Timeless Flight - This is a pretty cool tune. Nothing stood out for me on this one. But I still like it.
Holes - I like the time signature on this one. It creates a nice vibe. I like that slow feel to this one.
End Times - To repeat from earlier, this sounds like a Jon Oliva song like those featured on Wake of Magellan. Not bad, not superb. I like it.
Still I Pray For You Now - Nice Ballad. Or more of an intro for...
Reality's Fool - This song is just delightful. I don't liken it to any Savatage song. It's just a good Oliva song. Actually an excellent Oliva song. This one is my favorite off the album.
Hidden Track - Why is this hidden? This is bad-ass. I don't know the name of this, but it is a sweet instrumental that shows off some nice guitar work. This should have been extended and given vocals and it could have been the star on this album. But I still like it the way it is.
All in all, SUC is correct, this is an album any Savatage fan should salivate over. Nice catchy songs that beat the living crap out of you at times and also plenty of meaty emotional songwriting.
Thanks to SUC for the recommendation. You're right, I was missing out on a treat!
