1. Heaven and Hell (1980) 2. Holy Diver (1983)
Holy Diver wins 2nd place. It is truly a magical solo debut.
But now then, if these were the Olympics, there'd still be one more medal to give out. Which of these 15 remaining albums is the most deserving?

This is basically a tie for me. There's Long Live Rock 'n' Roll, Mob Rules, Last in Line and Dream Evil. Depending on the mood, I could go either way. Today, my mood says Mob Rules. But it is super close. Those four are all amazing records.

"Rising" for me again!
Polls realistically make no sense. An album can get 2nd place X amount of times, losing by a single vote each time, and finally get 1rst on say, Poll #7. So it is the 7th most popular album? Whatever

Not just 7th. An album could be 2nd in every single poll, and finish dead last. It just means it's controversial. The majority hates it and think's it's their worst, but it has its die hard fans who keep voting for it.
I did entertain the idea of doing a run-off each time when no album receives 50%+ of the votes, but then we'd probably never finish this. That's double the amount of polls. It is what it is, and you're free to do a better one if you so wish.

Dude, if the # of polls are really an issue for you. Maybe do this?
"What is your favorite album that sang on?"
Let the thread have time to run, tally up the numbers that each album gets, and BOOM! In one poll, we get a pretty good pulse on how the HoM Board views the stuff. Pretty simple? Not to mention, albums get put in the actual order they got voted into. <---(What a concept)

But you can't rank an entire discography based on 1st place votes only. Plus we all know the top favourites are Rising/Heaven & Hell / Holy Diver etc. But what about what's the 10th best album? I think that's an interesting poll. Remove the top favourites, one by one, and the polls dig deeper and deeper. We KNOW everyone ranks Holy Diver ahead of Master of the Moon and Lock Up the Wolves, but what's the consensus on those two albums against each other?

I get your premise. How accurate is the ranking, if like you said, an album keeps getting 2nd place throughout the polls?
If I ran a consulting firm and you requested research data on a specific group regarding albums Ronnie James Do I sang on throughout his entire career. This is how I'd do it.
1- Ask the group to rank all the studio albums from first to last. 1 through 17, minus the Elf stuff like you requested. 2- Give each a numerical value. For example, 17 for 1rst and 1 for 17th. 3- When a predetermined and/or estimated completion of inquiry by group is established, tally the numeric value from each participant. 4- The totals will give an exact position for each album as chosen by the group.
A little bit of math is involved. You might have to remove your shoes to count?

I'd probably get like two replies. That's asking a lot from people. I would ask for money for that kind of data. Polls are easy and provide the same data in a more fun way, in small bites.
And I'm an engineer. I do data analysis. Do I want my fanboy enthusiasm about Ronnie be work? It should not be. And I don't want numbers. I am not going to turn this into a graphical presentation of the appreciation of different parts of Dio's body of work. I'd much rather have proper discussion about each individual album and why they are winning and why they are better than the other remaining albums.
Does a simple data sheet of album rankings provide a platform to discuss why Angry Machines is so good it should win in a poll against Dehumanizer and The Devil You Know? Maybe. But probably not. Let's not get anal about the format here, guys.
I don't know you, Mr. B, but I don't quite get why you are so hostile about an online poll. All I am doing is trying to bring some fun in here. This is all an excuse to talk more about Dio. And to listen to the man's music.

Hey Lari:
Regarding proper album discussion, there really isn't much of that going on in any of the threads so far. Maybe, I jacked that up with my BS and made people bail? Who knows? My experience here tells me those that are gonna discuss, will discuss. (Usually about 1/3 of replies) Others will just pick their choice and carry on.
I get the fun intent and participate for that reason. Bummer you call my questioning the accuracy as hostility.

So 2 replies done in full, all 17 albums (34 data points) and you'd charge for that, really?
