Subject: Black Metal convert of sorts Sat Feb 05, 2022 10:17 am
My 18 year old walked into the room the other day, raised her arms in a weird resignation motion and said "Well, I guess I'm a fan of Atmospheric Black Metal."
That's kind of specific but I was so happy to hear her say it. Yay!

I, too, liked black metal when I was 18. I think it's just a phase.
By the time she is 50 she will listen to Saxon like all the normal folk.

Hmm....I'm 47 and like it more than ever. I think I would have liked it then but everything in the beginning was all about satan. Now it's a lot of nature, creation, or fairytale stuff which I can listen to.

My 16 year old son started dipping his toes into Black Metal about a year ago when he watched the Lords Of Chaos movie with me.
Apparently, that's the least cool way to discover black metal as far as B.M. fans are concerned (haha) but he dug the music in the film so he started goin' down YouTube rabbit holes pretty hard, getting into Mayhem, Burzum, Emperor, and blah blah blah. Black Metal has never been my thing but I figure, at least it's better than him listening to "trap" or whatever music is popular on Tik Tok.
The Black Metal phase came and went and now he's getting into vintage thrash - he's constantly asking me about good bands to check out. His favorite at the moment is Carnivore. He came home from school one day in a mood and said "I need something angry. What's a good angry album?" and I sez "Retaliation by Carnivore." He goes upstairs, I hear it blaring from YouTube in his room, and a little while later he came down like "That album was fucking A-MAAAA-ZING!" he was even more surprised when I told him that it was "The Type O Negative Guy," cuz he didn't like Type O at all.
He also owns a Mentors tee shirt (who he discovered thanks to the documentary "Kings of Sleaze") which he has proudly worn to school several times in the hopes that someone will notice and try to "cancel" him for it. Obviously that has not happened, because nobody under the age of 50 knows who the Mentors are/were unless they had cool parents who were into into sick/gnarly underground metal back in the day, like me.
