What do you consider to be their best and their worst and why?

The Best: King of the Grey Islands (the new one)
Why: Robert Lowe's vocals

So far this is my #1 of the year.

Best: Nightfall

Worst: ?

Ancient Dreams

Best: Epicus Doomicus Metallicus

Reason: it contains their best songs and no bad tracks

Best: Nightfall

Why? It's the epitomy (sp?) of doooooooooom, and a perfect 10!

Worst: Dunno, maybe that Chapter 4 or whatever the name of it is. Oh, and the Sjunger Sigge Fürst EP is pretty bad if you are not Swedish!

reason: it defines doom in all senses. Not a bad song on it. Its heavy and the feeling is outstanding!

Worst: From the 13th Sun

reason: felt like they were going through the motions. The vocals aren't that good. Hard to even say this is Candlemass.

I have not heard all of their albums, but from the ones I have heard.

Best : Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Reason : It doesn't have any bad songs, and it has some of the best songs ever made.

Worst : I haven't heard a bad Candlemass album yet.

i thought Black sabbath defined doom in all senses?

Candlemass took what BS did in their self-titled song, went even further with it, and explored that one style a lot more.

Sabbath had jazzy songs, bluesy stuff, piano songs, hard rock songs, etc. etc. They did a lot more than just doom, and really if you get down to it they didn't do pure doom all that much over their whole career.

their first album was quite doomy but they kinda adopted the style to stop being samey. do candlemass suffer that problem? i think its a cool name for a band. are they not similar to trouble

More epic then Troble, bigger sound, you could say, more metal!

Much better than Trouble IMHO.

From The 13th Sun is sh-t.

Candlemass is one of my favorite bands, but I am extremely partial to the albums featuring Messiah.

My faves:

1. Ancient Dreams (this is a METAL masterpiece!!! - not just a doom metal masterpiece, albeit IMO this is THE single best doom metal album ever released! EVER!)

2. Nightfall (I love this one almost as much as AD)

Worst: NONE - though I prefer their stuff with Messiah, they just haven't put out a bad album that I've heard. I can't really choose a worst. Although I'd have to probably pick one of their 90s albums without Messiah if I had to).

best: King Of The Grey Islands

worst: none

How is "King of the Grey Islands"? I have yet to pick it up. I was so sad to see Messiah leave ... *sigh* again.

GO! I think Robert Lowe is simply the better singer.

WOW - I am quite impressed with that. Perhaps even better than their recent "S/T" with Messiah.

I'll have to pick this up soon.

It's still no "Ancient Dreams", but it's in their top stuff - for sure! It almost gives them a bit of a 'Trouble' vibe.

I like different ones for different reasons. "Epicus" is the classic, I guess the one I'm most attached to. But I do "Chapter Six"; as I really like Tomas Vikstrom as a powermetal singer. It sure isn't their classic doom but I like it anyway. And I'm looking forward to "Grey Islands", but I'm hoping it sounds like Solitude Aeturnus, I haven't heard it yet though.

So I'm listening to From The 13th Sun this morning and realize that I LOVE IT! Instead of the "epic doom" sound it's got a loose, flowing vibe to it....which is definitely more my personal preference. Nothing against any of their albums...but this one was a very pleasant surprise. Psychedelic doom...awesome.

Definitely going to check out the other album with this lineup.
