Which American band had the better debut album?
I chose by region and the question is specific to debut album only.

Gotta go with Skynyrd. Still listen to that one pretty regular.

I gotta go with Nugent.
Snakeskin Cowboys and Stranglehold are really great songs.
Skynyrd would be my next choice.

Thought about going with Skynyrd but Montrose edges it out for me.

I would say Skynyrd. Their best songs are in it.

To me its Aerosmith, love the album, its raw, has a bit of a Stones meets Yardbirds vibe to it and the songs are great

It was really close between Aerosmith and Nugent. That Nugent release is so dark and electric and erotic. But I’ve partied, more than a few times, to Aerosmith. When a gathering knows the lyrics and tempo changes - forget it ! This blues album is great - trust me - Sure enough she did a Nugent cover of all things.

Im a huge fan of sammy Hagar.. I think he is one of the best most solid singers out there plus his lifestyle is very cool.. Huge fan of Ronnie Montrose’s guitar playing.. love the sound on this album.. always felt like it was ahead of its time.. could’ve easily been released in the 80s and sound current.. every song on the album it’s just killer.. no filler

I'm just a bigger fan of southern rock in general. That Kansas album is too proggy for me, the Nugent one is OK but starts sounding samey (I think all Nugent albums are like that), and while I've heard Aerosmith's debut I'm not that familiar with it. I've never even heard that Montrose; the only Montrose album I used to have was the one with the dinosaur/Godzilla thing on the cover.
But that Skynyrd debut has a lot of tracks I still spin a lot and recently ripped to a huge 200+ Southern rock collection I put together. I Ain't The One, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man and of course Freebird (which admittedly is waaaaaaay overhyped and not nearly as great as most Southern rock fans seem to think it is but it's still a good track). I think Freebird and another rock classic "Stairway To Heaven" have the same drawback, both take too long to get where they're ultimately going.

Kewl! Hagar is originally from Fontana in the Inland Empire region of southern California. He called his shows in Berdoo,, "hometown gigs" and they rocked cause he gave it his all. Are you familiar with Montrose's work with Edgar Winter & the Gamma stuff?

Again thanks! Big original Skynyrd fan myself, as well as southern rocker. Us long haired 70's stoner kids in Berdoo held them fear to our hearts. "Free Bird" is not even in my top 20 favorite Skynyrd tunes from the origins to the plane crash.

I have versions of "walking the dog" from Rufus Thomas, The Stones, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, The Yardbirds, Aerosmith, Rick Derringer, Spirit, and Ratt. Tyler is definitely unique in wearing his influence on the sleeve.

That is the only Aerosmith kick for me as of late. Have a hard time making it through "Rock In A Hard Place" & "Done With Mirrors". The stuff afterwards has moments, but the over use of outside songwriters kicks they band vibe to the curb. Of course, it is just (IMHDO)

Not a fan of post-crash Skynyrd James? I wasn't at first but I changed my opinion when Skynyrd became a Southern rock "supergroup" with the late, great Hughie Thomasson and Ricky Medlocke joining. I mean how can you not like a blending of Skynyrd, The Outlaws and Blackfoot? From that point I started investigating the earlier stuff with Johnny on vocals and while some of the albums were kind of hit or miss I found a lot of great tunes on those.

Nice comparison! I love The Outlaws and Blackfoot and latter day Skynyrd is a great mix.
