Funny, cause I always had a goal that on my fiftieth birthday, I was going to make sure I found a good concert to go to so I could get in the moshpitt one last time. I made that promise to myself way back in my twenties, thinking how old and decrepit I'd be at the ripe old age of fifty. Well my fiftieth birthday is two years away, so I'm thinking I need to move it to my seventy fifth birthday instead, cause there's no way I'm done with the pit in just two years.

Although if you live in a nursing home I guess ANY band is worth a jailbreak. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

I am still in every pit, for every show - generally once or twice a month. Not bragging, but honestly? These kids usually can't believe my bloated old ass can keep up! And I am just as comfortable in an Iron Reagan pit as I am dancing in a Ziggy Marley "pit". I really do not see myself letting up any time soon.

For most bands, and if my wife stays home, I usually try to get up front. if that fails, I stand in the back of the pit area, so I get a nice breeze from all the kids running around, and I get a better view of the band. I'll take a few strolls through the pit, but rarely run around like crazy anymore. Depends on the mood and band though, Slayer gets me going like no other so the pit is it.

I only rarely go to concerts nowadays, but at the last mosh-worthy gig I went to (Overkill/Prong/Municipal Waste in 2014) my buddy and I were content to stay at the bar and watch the young'ins killing each other in the pit. I sez to him "Y'know, 25 years ago we would'a been right in the middle of that," and he sez "I might break a hip if I try it now." I was telling people that I have seen complimented on my metal attire, and have seen people your age and older wearing metal band shirts, but I haven't seen those people at the local metal shows when they've come here. But yeah, if the local venues around me get around to caving in and letting metal bands play (a lot of the venues that used to have metal shows have closed; you'd be lucky to find local venues that would allow you to perform pop-punk now, sadly), I will be that guy with a walker wearing vintage death metal band shirts and sitting in the back enjoying the show while sitting down. I know some of them might work during times when there are local metal shows going on; I remember years ago, I had to get gas after a local early evening show, and the gas station clerk (who appeared to be in his mid to late 40s with short, graying hair) said, "I like your shirt." I was wearing my Sepultura - Beneath the Remains shirt at the time. The comment took me by surprise. Of course, it was obvious he wasn't there because of work at the time, but I've never seen him at the other local metal shows before or since (although he may have moved since). We had a brief chat about metal, it was really cool. I know some of those people don't like to go to metal shows because they don't like the presence "kids" (really teenagers), but almost every metal show is 18+/19+/21+, except for the household name bands. Even relatively "big for metal" bands like Trivium end up playing 18+/19+/21+ shows quite a bit.

| Why does it shock you that a guy in his late 40's commented on a Sepultura shirt? I mean if anything he should be shocked to see a younger man wearing the shirt. Kinda like my mom would feel if I walked in wearing a Beatles shirt. I guess people have it in their heads that older people can't like metal music. At least that's what my wife thinks. She's getting old on me with the classic crap I had to hear from my grandmother all the time:
Turn it down. Can't you play something nicer and relaxing. Why do they have to scream all the time. It all sounds alike. Ect etc...
I personally love seeing younger kids rocking the older bands. But I do wish you guys would stop saying hella. It belongs to my generation, make up your own slang words lol

It belongs to my generation, make up your own slang words lol People have seemed surprised that I am into metal, saying that I don't look like the type of guy that would listen to metal. Neither did this guy. It wouldn't have taken me by surprise as much if it was outside of where a metal venue was taking place. I, too, love seeing people much younger than me (I'm 33) sporting attire of classic metal bands. Especially considering nowadays, rock seems to be a rarity. I remember years ago, most people I worked with in their late teens/early 20s were into mostly hard rock, with maybe a few classic rock bands, and a few of the most famous metal bands thrown in. Now, a lot of them in that same age range where I live are into...country music. Ugh.

| A week or two ago I was out walking my dog in my neighborhood and I passed a guy about my age who was wearing a King Diamond tee shirt. He looked genuinely surprised when I said "Wow, the King! Badass shirt!" I guess he doesn't encounter many old time metallers. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| I can't wait to start wearing my new Earth vs The Wildhearts shirt. It has the album cover on the front (which is disturbing enough) but also the track list on the back. Songs like "Greetings From S**tsville", "Loves**t" and "My Baby Is a Headf***".
No matter how old I get I still feel like it's "fun" to upset uptight people. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| The whole stereotype that old people only like classical and big band music needs to stop. Heck, most of the elderly generation now werent even part of the Elvis generation when they were growing up, more the Beatles/Stones era if that. | |

It's all about when you grew up I think. Metal wasn't invented when my parents were kids, so they were listening to the Beatles and stuff. She used to hate my music, and always said it was just a phase I was going through. Well 35 years later, I'm still wondering when this phase is going to stop. I did shut her up one day when I asked her what she listened to as a kid. She replied, the Beatles, the Doors etc etc...I then asked her what she listens to as of that moment? The Beatles, The Doors....then the silent ah ha moment when she was probably remembering her mom saying it was just a phase lol

What's worse is, when your best friend that you used to discover new metal with, the one that went to the shows with ya, had your back in the pit if things got hairy, suddenly gets old and declares that he no longer really likes metal, and is getting into country music now. He still likes SOME of the older classic metal, but even that he says doesn't do much for him. It was a sad day indeed.

I'm washing my Wildhearts shirt as I type this; I can't wait to wear it to the grocery store and see if anything happens. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Yeah I get a lot of looks when I wear my mayhem fest shirt. It has a hot metal chick bare breasted with little stripper stars covering her nipples. I wear it sparingly, cause one of the dirty looks I get is from the wife. My only saving grace is, it was a gift from my cousin, so I can't get in trouble for buying it, and I can't throw out a gift either. | |

He still goes to Download every year and worships Iron Maiden. Proof that metal gets in your blood and you never outgrow it.
