Schlock-tober entry #15: "Boogeyman" (2005)
Fifteen years after his father's mysterious death, a young man (Barry Watson of TV's "7th Heaven") returns to his childhood home to finally face the supernatural entity that has haunted him ever since.. Pretty standard teen-horror stuff, it didn't suck but six months from now I probably won't even remember I saw this.
Is that a remake of the 80s flick where The Boogeyman comes out of a mirror? I thought that 80s flick was creepy as hell but I haven't seen it in years.
I don't think so. The "Boogeyman" in this one hides in closets and under beds, no mirrors.

Finished up the Netflix series Haunting of Hill House. Not a bad show, but kind of slow at times.

Had a mini-festival the last few days.
Halloween (1978) - No need to explain - but I did get a kick out of looking for things from California, where it was filmed.
C.H.U.D. I had watched this goofy "classic" with my Dad as a kid. It was actually pretty decent with a lot of now famous actors just getting rolling. A small appearance by John Goodman as a doomed beat cop.
The Stuff - I had never seen this. This movie just jumps right into it with no preamble, no background - nothing. Michael Moriarity is hilarious with his delivery. This was a surprisingly fun and silly "horror" movie about white goo bubbling from the ground that a company decides to package and sell as a dessert. People love it, but it changes them horribly. Basket Case - WTF?! I've been wanting to watch this for 30+ years, and it just never happened. It was both a delight...and a mind-effer. Siamese Twins seperated around 13 seek vengeance on all who were involved. The best part for me was the constant wailing/moaning that the mutant brother makes when he's upset/on the attack. The Howling - Somehow I'd never seen this "classic" werewolf movie. It wasn't bad at all, and I like some of the esoteric/occult flavor surrounding the movie. I was surprised at how HOT the three main actresses are. The human-werewolf transformations were pretty cool. This was the era of prolonged transformation scenes, with the FX guys showing off their chops. Not as awesome as An American Werewolf in London, but not bad. Halloween 2018 - I won't go into much detail since it's still out and new. There are LOTS of "Easter Eggs" and call backs to the original(s), so look out for those. SPOILER
Spoiler:
For men of a certain age: the name Gary Hogeboom popped up in this movie. Why are they talking about an old backup Cowboys and Colts quarterback? Weird.

The Last Shift (2014)
A rookie cop, on her first shift, is assigned to watch a closing police station and wait for a hazmat team to arrive and remove biological evidence. However, some crazy stuff starts happening to her and it becomes a living nightmare. Pretty effective thriller, better than expected.

During Trick Or Treating Wednesday I watched the South Park Halloween marathon on Comedy Central. I hadn't watched that show in forever but these were hilarious! This one was my favorite: "Night Of The Living Homeless":
The one where Stan's dad buys a Blockbuster franchise and slowly morphs into Jack Nicholson in The Shining was hilarious too. These parodies were a hell of a lot funnier than anything in The Simpsons "Treehouse of Terror" episodes in recent years.

"Dracula A.D. 1972" (1972)
It's been one hundred years since Count Dracula (Christopher Lee) and Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) battled to the death. Now some swingin' London teens messing with black magic resurrect the Count, who begins a new reign of terror. Fortunately Van Helsing's grandson (Cushing again) is ready to continue the fight against evil. A shag-a-delic campy-cool terror treat from England's legendary Hammer Studios -- Lee and Cushing are always fun to watch and the flick also features some nice eye candy courtesy of Brit babes Stephanie Beacham and Caroline Munro.

"Daphne & Velma" (2018)
For some reason, the female members of the Mystery Machine gang from "Scooby Doo" now have their own spinoff film. "D&V" is a prequel that shows how the gals first met at their hi-tech high school and solved their first mystery, when the school's best & brightest students suddenly start turning into brain dead zombies. There's no Scooby, no Shaggy, no Fred...and no point. This cheap looking DTV piece of crap will probably be a tough slog even for kids who are fans of the Scooby franchise (my 11 year old bailed at the halfway point), and if you don't have kids, there's no reason to bother. This flick makes the awful live-action "Scooby" movies from the early 00s look like the Royal Shakespeare Company. Hell, even the infamous "Scooby Doo" porn parody had better production values (and a hotter Daphne & Velma)!

Bob's Burgers
The new Arby's commercials have sort of ruined this show for me now that I know what "Bob" really looks like; that guy sure has a unique voice. The first time one of those Arby's ads came on I instantly thought "That sounds like Bob!"

That classic 70's movie? “So you and your old man, you're not afraid of them gar-things, huh? ”
The Shining -
This was probably the 3rd or 4th time I've seen this over the decades. I remember feeling underwhlemed each time. Maybe I'm expecting too much from what's supposed to be an all time classic?
Some thoughts:
I'd forgotten that the reason the Torrance's were headed to this hotel, and had it to themselves, is that they were the caretakers for the long 7-month "Winter" off season. 44 year old Scott kept thinking, "DREAM JOB!!!!" I would love, love, love this job. Love it! Barring a life-threatening injury/illness, this would be incredible.
Jack is a great actor. It comes through.
Shelley Duvall is a tragically goofy looking person. Poor thing. At least she got a career out of it.
The kid did a good job of being sufficiently weird/creepy.
The movie wasn't as bad as I remember, but this time I think I nailed down why I'm not a huge fan - pacing. I think it's about 20-30 minutes too long. Too much exposition or drawn out scenes. I'm not asking for the modern jump-scare spaz-a-thon, but maybe just a little tightening up of extraneous stuff.

Off from work for a few days... ordinarily I'd be outside raking leaves but since the weather isn't cooperating it's a "stay inside n watch movies" kind of day.
"Baywatch" (2017)
Muclebound lifeguard Mitch Buchanan (Dwayne Johnson) and his squad of beach bunnies lead a set of new dim-bulb recruits through training, then unravel a drug smuggling enterprise in the bay in this action-comedy riff on the classic, kitschy T&A TV series. It's not a great film by any means but the cast works well together and keeping my expectations low worked in the movie's favor. This was actually better than it had any right to be, considering its source.
"Sorority Party Massacre" (2012)
A big city cop is sent to the boondocks to investigate the case of a missing girl, and ends up mixing it up with a psycho who's killing sorority sisters at their annual convention. Yea, I know, real high concept stuff (haha). I was hoping for a so-bad-it's good splatter fest with healthy amounts of T&A, but I ended up disappointed on both fronts. The girls are cute but mostly keep their clothes on (boooo!), the gore is minimal and the whole movie seems to have been made for about twenty bucks. AVOID.

I can't believe it's been 20 years! I loved this movie when it came out, and I think it's really held up well over time. I'd forgotten how cool Kris Kristofferson is and how hot the Dr. chic was. The weapons were fun as well.

I'm halfway through the second season of "Gotham" as I'm rewatching the first four seasons in preparation for the apparent finale of the series which is slated to start in January. This show has so many characters and plotlines that I want to make sure I'm up to date and remember everything. It's been cool re-watching the Ed Nygma character morph into the second place arch-villain The Riddler (behind Penguin who was the main villain from Day One).
And the actor playing The Penguin is now and forever will be The Penguin to me in the same way that Leonard Nimoy will always be "Spock". This guy is absolutely great in the role of "The Penguin".
