Thoughts And Prayers For My Dad

I know I don't hang around here too often anymore, but I'd appreciate thoughts and/or prayers for my dad. They found a mass on his leg and he will be undergoing some tests. Obviously a mass is not cancer for sure, but it is a possibility and being in his 70s, he's at the age where things like this tend to happen. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing serious.

The worst fears have been realized. It's both bone and lung cancer. He hasn't told me yet, but my mom got the unofficial word from my sister's husband. My dad's going to talk to me later and break the news. Honestly don't know how to process this. I had braced myself for the worse but obviously that can't prepare you for reality.

I really feel for you DB - I lost my dad last year to a freak accident. Thoughts and blessings for you and your family at this difficult time.

My thoughts are with you DB. As I have experienced cancer firsthand with myself this year - diagnosis can be grim but keep being positive and try to help your dad be positive.

I don't know why I said his leg, the mass is on his spine. He will be having a surgery to remove it and they will be doing a fusion either tomorrow or Monday. I don't think he's quite ready to talk about the cancer just yet. I talked to him today but I he never said "cancer", just that he was having surgery. More will be known after the procedure. On the plus side it is an outpatient surgery so he won't have hospital time just yet.

I haven't said anything more on this mainly because while I'm not in denial about the situation, I just try not to dwell on it to much because there isn't much I can do about it. But here is an update on everything thus far:

My dad has been officially diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Over a month ago they removed the tumor on the back of his neck (top of the spine). For the past several weeks and some more later they are doing radiation treatment on his neck. After that they will figure out where to go from there.

Like when he lost his leg, he appears to be taking it in stride though that could be just a front. Living with one leg is not fatal but stage 4 cancer survival rate is very slim especially for someone in their 70s. However, I understand it's important to remain positive. No matter what little there is of it, there is always hope. No matter the odds, there is always the possibility to beat them.

Hang in there DB. Prayers for you. A loved one with cancer is very hard to deal with.

Just make the most of the time you have. If things don't work out, you'll have time to mourn, don't do it now. Make your dad feel happy, enjoy your time together and remember that in his mind you are a continuation of his life.

That sounds like sage advice from Lari DB.  That's what I would try to do if I was dealing with what you are dealing with.  Thoughts and prayers for you.

Found out today that in two weeks, he will start chemo treatment.
